I think it's really important to keep learning your whole life.  I also think that taking classes is an enormously nourishing experience.  Towards that end, I'm in Utah to be a student at an art retreat.  It's the Roots & Wings Creative Retreat, led by Judy Wise, Katie Kendrick, Misty Mawn, and Stephanie Lee.

I have been a huge fan of Judy's journaling style for many years.  She's the reason I signed up for the retreat.  Here's an example of her work:

She also does beautiful work with wax and plaster.

Katie is a well known painter.  Here is an example of her work:

I own Misty's book Unfurling.  Here is an example of her beautiful work:

And Stephanie is a jewelry artist and a painter.  Here's an example of her work:

Last night all four teachers welcomed us with a dinner and lovely gift boxes filled with art and supplies and food.  They talked about so many lovely things, but the thing that I'm still mulling over is something Judy said.  Essentially, she said that some people say art retreats are 50% about the art and 50% about the people.  She thinks they're actually 100% about the art and 100% about the people.  I couldn't agree more.  It's the combination of learning and experimenting and failing and succeeding and talking to like minded people that makes these events so very very special.

I'm super excited to get my art on with these talented ladies at the helm!  I'll be sure to report back on the adventure next week!

When was the last time you were a student?  Did it nourish your creative soul?

Thanks for stopping by!

  • Wow! The comment in Judy’s journaling “I was going to tell you but then I changed me mind” is profound. Have fun and soak up lots of things we can learn from you!

  • I LOVE taking classes. Our local museum offers classes and I try to take one every now and again. Last semester I took drawing… next semester watercolor. But… the classes are geared more towards formal art… not journalers. I just make the info work for me. Other than that, I rely on on-line classes to help with the journal keeping aspects of my art.
    Have a GREAT time…. Emie

  • That sounds like such a great experience. Last two classes I took were your watercolor class and Online Card Classes Summer Card Camp 2. Very different but loved both and learned a lot. However I would love to find a class near me with a “live” teacher and students!

  • So excited for you! I too looked at that retreat earlier this year, but I actually spent a week with Judy two weeks ago at EncaustiCamp. She has such a wonderful spirit and for me she exudes her wisdom so graciously. Have fun and I can’t wait to hear about what you did. I know you’ve talked about encaustic but have resisted — I don’t know if you will experience the draw of the beeswax or if it will be a wax free zone. I will be curious to hear.

  • It is important to be open to other people’s styles so we can learn and move on. I’m glad to see you took time off for yourself. You do so much for us. Last week I read a quote…too bad I didn’t write it down…I don’t know who to give credit, but they basically said we have success or education….the word failure was left out. I read that as either we succeed or we learn from what we did and make changes next time…..I wanted to pass that along.

  • I have a question about art that you create in workshops and online classes. According to competition guidelines you are not allowed to use this type of work as it is not considered original art. My question is…what is it considered and how do you classify or categorize work you have created from a class? Thank you, Marnie

  • The last time I was a student in a class was about 4 months ago. I took a workshop with local artist Bill Buchman, who I took 3 months of weekly classes the year before. His classes nourished my creative spirit, challenged me, and fed into my own artmaking. My husband said he really noticed a difference in my painting after I took class with Bill! Here’s a link to a very short video (1+ min) I made showing Bill, my classmates and some of the things we did with him. He truly inspires me, what a gift! http://youtu.be/S_ZoiDlqxG8 -thanks for asking, Julie 🙂

  • Oh good for you!!!! I love retreats and art classes and totally agree with you. It is about the art and learning (one is never to old to learn something new) and the people. My last one was with Dina Wakley in OKC. Six hour drive but ohhhhh so worth it. It wasn’t a “retreat” but all day classes but for me, it was just like a retreat. Because we are on a budget, I have to pick and choose. One day perhaps I’ll be able to do an actual “retreat” :-). Can’t wait to hear all about it.

  • Hi Julie, I’m sure you’re having the best time in the world! I’ve never stopped learning. Now that I’m retired and and have more free time, I take advantage of every opportunity to learn something new every day. I mostly take online classes; most live classes ever come to my town, so I have to do whatever it takes to learn and fill my artsy soul!
    Hugs,

  • Good for you, Julie…yay!
I just looked at the link to the retreat, the views and setting alone sounds greate, then add the talented presenters and enthusiastic participants to make a wonderful time.
Nurture yourself and then we want to see lots of pictures of the art and event.
I have not done very many retreats like this, but I belong to a group of ladies who meet about once a month to share projects, stories, and of course some food. It has helped every one of us to achieve something from better art to dealing with life problems.

  • I only know about Misty Mawn in that group and love her work and book. Looks like a great workshop. I have only taken a few online classes in art. I’d love to go to one in person. One day…maybe with you teaching!

  • I am definitely a student everyday. I still struggle with saying I’m an artist. I try to create something or work on a project everyday. I don’t think I could survive without feeding my creative side. I do take online classes as often as time & finance will allow. Thank goodness for all the wonderful artist, such as yourself, that provide my heart with such delicious nourishment!
