Today I thought I'd share a basic but most excellent and useful technique: how to create a seamless repeating pattern with your stencils! Watch the video for the how-to:

Here are the samples from the video:
This technique is how I created the background for this scrapbook page:
I used the 12×12 version of the Tiled Flower stencil and turned it at a 45-degree angle and used several colors of paint on top of yellow cardstock.
This is the same technique I used to get the 12×12 version of the Rug stencil to span both journal pages in this spread:
I used rubber cement and foil to create the pattern.

I think I own about 70! Plus a bunch of your bits. 🙂 Putting a border of duct tape on a stencil is such a great idea. Though, taping it down works best for me, I’m such a klutz.

Depends who you ask. My family would say I have enough but I say you can never have enough. I use them in my mixed media pieces, book arts,art journal, encaustic and furniture painting. At least 35-40 but that is not nearly enough.

I love all the tricks and instruction I learn from your newsletters and blog… I have about 50 stencils… I keep them in SEI “books” so I have one size 6×6 filled with 2 refills; one 8×8 filled with one refill and two books of 12×12 both filled with 2 refills. This makes it easy for me to take a certain size to class or where ever and easy to see quickly.

i dont have any….i wish v got them in india….the ones v do are way too expensive…i already spend a lot on my monthly art supplies…nd there is a big list of things i still need to buy..i am a stay at home mom…so cant stretch the purse more….i hope i win…but even if i dont i want to thank u for sharing ur art,ideas,journey…it inspires and motivates me ..alott 🙂

A local store went out of business so I purchased a ton of kid stencil books that are good for outlining or stenciling/stamping through the larger openings. I learn so much from you. Thank you.

Great video Julie! Good info to know. I’m still fairly new to stencils, have about 10 so far. Love them! I have even made a few from leftovers from projects. Love stencils! You can use them in so many ways. Thanks so much for all you do to teach us new stuff!

I have more than a hundred and that’s probably a low estimate. They are all organized and easy to reach and I use them often, but I do have quite a lot. But I *love* them.

Hi Julie, last time I looked for a stencil it amazed me how many I had. Some of them I didn’t even remember I had… But, just as with books, You can’t have too many!

I am so glad I watched this again – I totally missed seeing you cut off the ‘hard edge’ of the makeup sponge so you could keep using the same one. Genius!!!
