Lately, I've been feeling an overwhelming desire to work larger. Not an easy task in my little Manhattan apartment. However, I made it work on this recent piece, done on top of a large sheet of watercolor paper:
From far away it looks like a painting, but it's actually paint mixed with collage. Take a peek at the details!
I'm super excited to keep working large. I want to work even bigger! Just need to figure out how to make it work. Large work has such a different impact! There's so much more space to play with details. I'm really loving it.
What's the largest piece of art you've created?
Thanks for stopping by!

Lovely! Love the colors, the interest and how you were able to see the image of a face with all of the details. Beautifully done! I encourage you to do more.

First of all – that is so freakin cool! I love how it looks from far away, then seeing the details of the collage papers up close. The largest piece I have made is 16″ x 20″, and I have another started that size. But one of these days I want to do an installation piece. I have an idea that is rolling around in my brain. Someday…

Love it! My biggest artwork is about 6′ X 6′. Wish I knew how to send a picture…I really enjoyed doing it.

16×20 also — I’ve been doing quite a bit of collage lately – love that you can use up all those bits and pieces that you hate to throw away, but they’re just sitting there. I hope to do a face in collage soon – have seen some great work done by other artists…the name escapes me right now, but there is a young man that has had several faces in the New Yorker, they are fabulous! My latest collage I did on canvas – think I like that since it’s finished and ready to hang, you don’t need a frame-whereas on watercolor you need a frame to finish. Love this Julie – inspired me to keep working at it.

The largest I ever painted was a 30×60 foot (yes, that’s foot) canvas backdrop for a musical. It was supposed to be a map; I used a compressor and painted great and wonderful shapes of all colors of paint, letting it drip where it would, and then we hung it upside down on the stage, so the drips flowed up. Also painted a similar size backdrop of an Edwardian conservatory (lots of small glass panes involved, set in white mullions, all realistically shaded) for Shaw’s Misalliance–had to do it twice, though, because I kicked a bucket of paint over and it splashed all over the bottom quarter of the backdrop. Guess who spent the night repainting many panes of glass and shaded white mullions! Not to mention a couple of ferns! Aaargh!

This must be the bigger collage piece you mentioned in class on Sunday – it’s AMAZING!!! I think the biggest I’ve done so far is 18×36, but I’ve got some larger canvases in my studio just waiting to be used! I might just have to use one of them for a collage 🙂
