I've been traveling and as a result my little mola has been progressing!

from the Balzer Designs Blog: Mola Update September 2015

As you can see, I'm adding color.  Some of it is in traditional mola style (reverse appliqué — cut away to reveal the layer of color underneath) and part of it is simply appliqué added on top.

The good news is that my stitching is getting better — curves are curvier and points are pointier, with plenty of room for more improvement.  The bad news is that as I progress I realize how terrible my early stitching was.  In the end, I just have to shrug my shoulders and say, it's all a learning process.  And how lucky am I to have the time, patience, and opportunity to learn a new skill.   Being a beginner is a good thing.  There's nowhere to go but up!

I've stitched on trains, planes, and in hotel rooms.  And yes, you can take scissors with a blade up to 4" long on U.S. domestic flights.

I'm really enjoying the slow process of creating and the learning curve of appliqué.  I actually feel excited to go on a trip because I know it means I'll get to take out my mola and practice.  I'm looking forward to sharing more mola progress in another month or so!

If you'd like to learn more about molas, I have a bunch of resource links in this post.

Thanks for stopping by!

  • Good Morning, Julie….Your Mola is looking great! Just think of all the stitching time you’ll have flying over to Jane’s “nest” in Australia…I’m jealous! I wish I was going to be joining you guys! Question: are you using 100% cotton in this mola? Love the updates….you’re doing a wonderful job…what will you be doing with it when you’re finished and how big is it? I’m going to try it but I’m working on “folk bags” right now. Not enough hours in the day for everything I want to try. Hugs, Sue
