Art Journal Every Day: February Favorites

from the Balzer Designs Blog: Art Journal Every Day #artjournal #artjournaleveryday

If you're new to Art Journal Every Day, there is a short introduction here.  All of the previous posts can be found archived here.  Remember, it's just ten minutes of nourishing your creative self every day!  No need to finish anything or even like it. If you've done some art journaling this week, use the hashtag #artjournaleveryday so that we can all take a peek.  Even if you're not on social media, you can see everything (from twitter, pinterest, instagram, and facebook) that uses that hashtag here.

When I started the #artjournaleveryday hashtag, I never dreamed that there would be more than 17,000 posts!

How exciting, is that?!

From time to time, I like to share some of my favorites from that pool of immense talent.  So, here they are with some thoughts on why they stood out to me:

Artsongstress
For me, an art journal is about *both* being visually interesting and working out my feelings.  This spread beautifully does both of those things.  I also love the blue and yellow figure and want to play with filling some shapes in a similar way.

Cmeisart
Amazing how one letter can make such a difference, right?!  A brilliant way to incorporate a found image and make it your own!

Craftytrog
Sheep made from simple circles?!  Genius!  And I love the folk art-y way that craftytrog has set each sheep in its own box.  I'm going to steal both of those ideas!

De-tekenclub
The drawing is charming.  And I am loving the effortless way the book text has been incorporated into the painting.  It feels so natural.  This spread makes me want to try adding collage into my sketchbook pages instead of always starting with a blank white page!

Elhad
Graphic.  Simple.  Powerful.  Colorless.  A reminder that busy isn't always the only choice. Also that lettering!  I love that it's wonky yet graphic.

Embellishstudios
Can you fall in love with a page at first sight?  I love the pattern — complicated and yet super simple with a very cool color palette.  I love the figure on the right side, plus the rays emerging from around the face and that awesome striped shirt.  Also, I love the tip that embellishstudios gives in her comment: go to Pinterest to find the words for your pages!

Graindevoie
I love work that feels unique and a little bit bizarre.  This drawing reminds me that drawings need not be realistic.  Also I love the way graindevoie has used colored pencil to capture these multi-colored creatures.  Plus: What a great idea to illustrate a quote.  I usually go drawing to quote, but now I want to try it the other way around!

Huijyu
Love the colors.  Love the simple patterns.  Love the thin lines.  Love the contrast of pattern & colored space.  Love the darks and lights.  Just love.  This is a page that I want to sit and analyze so that I can steal some of huijyuforester's talent!

Mtcombine
Great spread, but the thing I love the most: it's done in a ruled notebook.  You don't need a lot of supplies to make art.  I love that this looks pretty much like pens, magazine images and text, a gluestick, and maybe some paint (the yellow circle).  Art is never going to be about having the "right" supplies.  It's about time and personal expression.

Padmerlin
I have a current obsession with botanicals of all kinds.  I love this simple bouquet, which doesn't strive to be realistic, and yet has an emotional quality.  It makes me want to create dozens of floral paintings experimenting with style and color!

Sarafreeplus5
There is so much in this page where there is actually so little.  Wow.  I adore this minimalist approach.  Circles and squares have never looked so good!  Not to mention, that face!  It's just a few lines, but so bold and graphic.  I love it!

Sarakoren
Like I said, I'm obsessed with florals.  This is a very different floral from padmerlin's and I love it too!  Sunflowers will always make me think of Van Gogh!  I love the colors saracorren has chosen — especially that magical purple!

Sonotladylike
I'm starting to sound like a broken record, but: unique & bizarre.  Check!  And check!  I love this two-headed creation.  So fun!  It makes me want to create a few fantastical multi-headed faces in my own art journal!

Taniaahmed
This page had so much white space that it stopped me in my tracks.  And then I read what taniaahmed wrote: "I'm paying more attention to details and colours and allowing white space to exist."  Yes, girl!  Yes!  I need to do that too!  I need to let white space exist.  It is sooooo hard for me, but I want to get better at it and I know the only way is practice!

I hope these pages have inspired you as much as they've inspired me.  Crack that art journal open this weekend and start playing!

Thanks for stopping by!

  • Beyond mind boggling. I loved the coffee cup quilt. I’m drawing coffee cups all of the time in coffee shops. My pages are not afraid of white space, or any color space. My hyperactive brain needs peace. Thanks for sharing.
