Two Weeks at the Crow Barn: My Presentation

Last weekend at The Crow Barn (the weekend between the two weeks of class), we each had to do a short presentation of our work for Nancy Crow and our fellow classmates.  You were given the option of bringing your actual quilts with you, or you could do a digital presentation.  I opted for digital and I thought that I would share the slides from my presentation with you.

But first: I broke the rules.

I don't have a huge back catalog of quilts.  So, I decided to put together a presentation that showed my artwork on paper next to my works in fabric.  The works were not inspired by each other — at least not consciously.  Rather, I paired them in order to provide context for my fellow classmates — who have never seen my artwork.

Slide1
Slide1

Above: The fabric collage (right):

  • reminds me of the inspiration wall (bottom left) in my studio.
  • contains a monoprint (the black and white image) — There are monoprints on my inspiration wall.
  • contains a thread "sketch" (the girl with the bubbles around her) which reminds me of my sketchbook (top left).
  • contains several "lacy" prints which remind me of the paper snowflakes and lace image on my inspiration wall.

Slide1

Above: This one is pretty obvious: I like faces and words.

Slide1

Above: This pairing is more about color. I tend to like strong color contrast.  I often choose a major color theme (green) and then add pops of contrasting color (pink, purple, red, brown).

Slide1

Above: In some ways this Modern Quilt (left) is not at all my style.  But when I hold it up to some of my work on paper (right) I can see that I do sometimes work in plain color fields and geometrics.

What do you think? Can you answer my question: What is the intersection of my work on paper and my work on fabric?

I'll be sharing more from The Crown Barn next week — you can look forward to week two day-by-day!

Thanks for stopping by!

  • Hey, Julie it was great to meet you in person last week at the Barn. It’s so fun to hear your perspective on your time there. I’m sorry the first week you mentioned you felt “out of place”. I was really looking forward to being in class with you, but life happens and I had to cancel. I hope to read by week two, you felt the love of the Barn.
I have enjoyed following your work for several years. I think your art is a natural for quilt making. But really it’s a personal question for you… “What is the intersection of my work on paper and my work on fabric?” So many of the Barn students are looking to develop their voices, but you already have a clear voice and it’s clear to me, I see the crossover. That doesn’t mean your voice might not be singing a few additional notes in quilt making as you hone your construction skills. I know once in a while still my voice says… #!$% dang, I can’t get that seam to lay flat!!! Ha!
I think you’re adorable, and love your work.

  • I see a correlation between your artwork and quilts in the strong graphic lines and use of bright vibrant colors. There is absolutely nothing dull about either one of your mediums.

  • I’m not sure you ever gave a reason for “no” photos or other information at the Crow Barn. Is there really something so terribly exclusive about the place? Or is there something so great about Nancy Crow’s teaching that she doesn’t want anyone to know about unless they pay her for it?
You have really found your place in the art world and keep evolving as new ideas come to you. Keep on doing your thing.

  • Can you answer my question: What is the intersection of my work on paper and my work on fabric?
paper and fabric are different mediums of paint which provide a different look. but in most of your work on either medium YOUR HAND COMES THROUGH AND I CAN SEE THAT.
you mentioned the color fields modern quilt was not your style. the difference i see between the color blocking with the fabric and paper is that the paper color fields are not 100% straight edged lines and the color is layered with texture whereas the quilted fabric lines are very straight edged with very little texture. in your other works whether paper or fabric i see lots of geometric shapes but the edges are not completely straight which makes them soft and flowing and i always see so much texture in your work whether on paper or fabric. YOU KEEP YOU IN EVERYTHING YOU DO JULIE EXCEPT WHEN YOU DON’T FOLLOW YOU and then you know it deep down inside! I LOVE YOUR EVOLUTION AND YOUR WORK. YOU ARE AN INSPIRATION. THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO! KEEP YOU IN EVERY MEDIUM YOU WORK WITH BECAUSE YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE!

  • What a fascinating question! I definitely see you in both fabric and paper through the bold colors and the graphic arrangement. I am drawn to your art because I see joy on the surface and a challenge as I continue to study it. I am anxious to hear about the rest of your time at the Barn!
