Back in February, I created this mixed media collage piece:

Painting-noborder-wm
Painting-noborder-wm
It was meant to be part of my ongoing series of work about my experience of motherhood.  The series features vessels (bowls, vases, cups, etc.) and plants in various stages of bloom.  I showed it to my Mom and she was insistent that it was a house with a staircase and somehow, that bugged me.

I lived with it for a few weeks, but it kept bugging me.  So, I painted a new painting on top of it.

Withmeforscale-wm
Detail2-wm
Detail2-wm
This version of the mixed media collage is more flat and contained.

Dried_flowers_in_stone_vases-wm
Where the first piece was exuberant and wild, the second is more polished and contained.

Sidebyside-wm
What do you think?  Which version of this artwork speaks to you?

Thanks for stopping by!

  • Hi Julie-I think both pieces are great but I do prefer the subdued piece. Your mom is right about the staircase in the first creation.I can see it immediately. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge with us. Enjoy your son, he is growing up. Our granddaughter is 3.5 now. How time flies when you are having fun!

  • Love the second one as it seems more like your style. The original is disjointed and hard to find focus – probably more like motherhood! The black and white basket seems to conflict with the “stairs”. Then the dark bottom instead of grounding it, drags it. Maybe it’s just so different from your norm that your mom and I struggle to enjoy it. You see what we don’t. That’s why you’re the artist and I merely an observer and lover of art. Keep doing.

  • I prefer the second. While I loved the exuberance of the first, I found it hard to know where to look or where the focus was. I too saw a house and stairs. I only ‘saw’ the jug after several looks at it. The second piece just feels clearer, while retaining lots of texture and interest in the individual elements.
That said, I love your style, and love anything you do, lol – both are lovely.

  • Quite honestly, at the very first glance my reaction to the first collage was: Must be titled “Home again!”. It gave me the impression of someone very happily returning home after a long absence. On second glance, I realized I was wrong …
I like both pieces – lovely colours, shapes, composition.
Are vessels with flowers in them a common symbol for motherhood? A mother myself, I have never thought of looking at motherhood that way. (Having said that, I must admit that I wouldn’t know how to symbolize/picture motherhood.)
Last not least, July: Thank you so much for your newsletters. They not only provide lots of eyecandy, but food for thought as well.

  • Hi Julie, I saw the door and staircase, too and thought it was intentional. You wrote that this piece is about experiencing motherhood and it made so much sense to me, to include stairs and a door. I also like the dark parts.
I became a mom at 42 and the original painting really moves me, because it has dark spots, happy spots, stairs that you need to climb, a door that opens to something new. I can totally relate to it.
The second one is nice and I would definitely hand this in my living room, but I like the first one better.

  • I like the cacophony of color, shape, lines in the first. But, now that you’ve mentioned the stairs I can’t unsee it. Given that, I would have repainted it, too. While I like the 2nd one, it seems more controlled than the first.

  • I love the exuberance of Summer House. It reminds me of Cape Cod, which gets quite lively, like your painting, this time of year. For me the motherhood connection is that’s where we brought our kids when they were little. Now we live there.
