Hello, friends! Here is a little bit about life around here right now:
Design Boot Camp Level 2 started this week and, as a result, I am in my sketchbook every single day.
The thing about teaching that always amazes me is how much I learn when I teach. The artwork in my sketchbook is by Richard Diebenkorn. I dream of seeing work from his Berkeley Series in person some day. In the meantime, I have the coffee table book to pore over.
We have been hyper COVID careful, but we ventured out to a restaurant to eat indoors and it was magical. I had forgotten how nice it is to visit a restaurant.
The little guy loved the experience, though his favorite part was the bathroom. The ladies room had one of those little toddler seats mounted on the wall — the ones that allow you to go the bathroom without your toddler opening the door and/or running away. He said to me: "I want to stay in the ladies room forever." Afterwards, we continued the novel experience by riding the escalator in the mall for an hour. Not hyperbole. Up and down and up and down and up and down.
He has the sweetest temperament and the kindest heart. And he looooooves to spend time in the studio.
I don't know how I got so lucky. ❤️
Current art crush?
This month's art crush is Jeremy Miranda. His work isn't at all like mine, but I love seeing his painterly take on every day things and especially how he handles light.
So, that's the scoop on life around here at the moment. If you're a Monthly Member, the March personal and studio vlogs are up in the classroom.
What's the difference between a personal vlog and a studio vlog?
- Personal vlogs have a lot of daily life stuff (lots of baby) and a bit of random art content. They're pretty much like the old weekly vlogs you can still see on my YouTube channel. All Members have access to personal vlogs.
- Studio vlogs are art focused on a single art project or art-related topic. Past studio vlogs include: behind-the-scenes of putting together an online class, a studio tour, a peek into my sketchbook, a look at a day in the studio, etc. Maker Members & Super Learner Members have access to the studio vlogs.
Thanks for stopping by!

Thanks for the update and especially highlighting Jeremy Miranda’s work, which I wasn’t familiar with. The way he handles light is incredible. His work looks so simple yet not simple. I get the art crush… truly great stuff. I’m kinda awe-struck.

Still laughing at you going up and down for an hour on the elevator. What good parents you are and wonderful your son is sharing your joy of art.

Hi Julie
I’ve been meaning to ask you this as I see you use lots of baby wipes for your art as do I. My question is, if the wipes are so great in removing acrylic paint, what do they do to the poor babies??

I think it depends on what baby wipes you use. The ones I use have nothing but water in them. No chemicals. No fragrances. Theyre just water wipes.
