ScanNCut DX: Cutting Craft Foam is Easy!

It is super easy to cut craft foam with your ScanNCut DX machine.

You simply need to remember to properly prep your foam and your machine.  So, let's talk about how to do it.

The first generation of ScanNCut machines had two blades: a Standard Blade and a Deep Cut Blade.  The Deep Cut Blade was the obvious choice for cutting things like craft foam.  Deep material.  Deep blade.

The current generation of ScanNCut DX machines have four blades: a Standard Auto Blade, a Rotary Auto Blade, a Thin Fabric Auto Blade, and a Vinyl Auto Blade.  So which one should you use to cut craft foam?

The Auto Blade!

Yep, your Standard Auto Blade will do the trick.  You see, the way the ScanNCut DX cuts thick materials is by making multiple passes.  Your Auto Blade can detect the thickness of the material you put down on your mat and set itself to make as many passes as necessary to cut through the material.  This is how the ScanNCut 330D DX machine is able to cut most materials up to 3mm.

Here are the key takeaways:

ONE: Tape your material to the mat.  Stay within the black border when you do so.

TWO: Adjust the Scanner Lever to the number two position.

THREE: Allow the AutoBlade to make multiple passes.

I hope you'll give cutting craft foam a try.  If you're not into craft foam, the process for cutting stiff felt and chipboard is almost exactly the same!  Just remember: no Deep Blade is required when you've got a ScanNCut DX at your side.

BTW: Creating my foam succulent was as easy as cutting out my foam (using one of the built-in rolled flower designs), rolling it up, and popping it into a pot from the craft store!

  • Why does it snag when cutting foam letters? Followed all the directions, yet cannot do foam letters. We want to make stamps for a kindergarten classroom. Help! It will take much longer with a Sizzix machine.
    Thank you in advance.
