Hello everybody! I'm taking this week off. But I wanted to leave you with something to think about this week! Here are five posts from the archives that I think are worth re-visiting for a variety of reasons.
Twenty Questions: September 2009
Go ahead and check out what I was thinking and what I was making eleven years ago. Reading the text, I'm still the same person with the same likes and dislikes, but looking at the photos…time and thoughtful practice make a big difference! (And it's worth clicking through to read the post I wrote about teaching the next day!)
Canvas Name Tags: May 2011
I *hand stitched* 50 name tags for my students and you know what? Nobody cared. It was one of the most disappointing projects I've ever worked on, but I blogged about it and it made me feel better! Plus it taught me not to spend time on that kind of thing. (And sort of related is this 2018 post about what 2 hours of stitching looks like.)
Five Lessons from the Crow Barn: June 2018
These are lessons that I need to learn and re-learn over and over again. And probably you do too. The fact is, learning is hard. But it is so worthwhile. So take the shortcut and learn from my mistakes!
Abstract Expressionism Studio Class at MoMA: Part One: June 2014
I have hundreds and hundreds of photos from museum visits and classes I've taken all over the world in the archives of my blog. But this post is a fave because this class blew my mind and changed the direction of my artwork. There's also a part two.
15 Things You Should Give Up To Be Happy: Art Version: September 2014
Read this and then read this again. It's a 2022 mantra for me.
I hope that I've given you enough reading and inspiration for the week. In case you're looking for more:
- You can search the blog archives (12 years of blog posts).
- I've got hundreds of free videos on my YouTube channel.
- I will still be posting stamps to instagram every day for #CarveDecember!
- And of course, I've got tons of great online classes for you.
Talk to you again in 2022!

oh, my, the nametags!!! how i wish for such a personal bit of balzer art. Julie, folks *did* care … commenter Marta mentioned she put it on her purse and keeps looking at it. folks took them for granted at first, but i bet many of them came to appreciate the love and effort. besides, there’s just no accounting for taste!
signed, jealous and nametagless
