Find your favorite lacy cut file and give this super cool technique a try!

June-DieCutInlay-500
This is a fun and easy technique that uses both the positive and the negative of your cuts.  For those of you out there who always look at your mat and wish you could use those extra little cut outs…

…now you can! Yay!

Some tips to keep in mind:

  • You'll note that I used my ScanNCut DX to cut the same design out of cardstock as well as patterned paper. I like mixing plain colored cardstock with patterned paper.  One of the keys is making sure that you choose a patterned paper with a tight abstract pattern.  This helps it to better blend with the colored cardstock.
  • Be sure to mix and match all of your pieces.  This ensures that there is absolutely no waste.  Remember, the outline doesn't have to be black. It can be quite a fun look when it's not!
  • Reverse grip tweezers are enormously helpful for lifting up teeny tiny little pieces and placing them exactly where you want them.
  • Any lacy cut file will work for this paper crafting technique.  Look through the built-in designs in your ScanNCut, as well as the Brother catalogue of cut files.  You can use Die Cut Inlay to make beautiful florals, amazing repeating patterns, and adorable Disney characters!
  • You can see that I turned my die cut inlay butterflies into greeting cards. But you could use them in an art journal, on a scrapbook page, or even turn them into Christmas tree ornaments! Lots of possibilities.

I hope you enjoyed this video.  At Brother's request I'm trying to create shorter videos.  Let me know what you think of this style of video — short & with written captions. Less or more useful than the longer more detailed videos?

Thanks for stopping by!

P.S. I am a paid spokesperson for the Brother ScanNCut.  It is a machine that I love and use.  All projects and opinions are my own.

  • Julie, Love this! I just cut out some butterflies this week for an outdoor flag and threw away those bits. Darn! Guess I’ll have to cut some more. Thanks for this tip.

  • Julie, great tip for inlays! As for shorter videos, this was ok since it was very simple and easy to do. More complex tutorial videos requires more time. I think 2-5 minute videos are considered short. The graphics on this video were really quick and took a bit for my eyes to adjust too. Maybe my old eyes were tired.
I prefer the videos 2-5 minutes with detailed info if needed. If you are doing something really complicated, , I appreciate the time given to the details you give on the Scan n Cut.
You can tell Brother, one of your viewers said, you are doing a great job, no matter the length of the video.

  • This is great! I hate throwing out those little bits…so I don’t. This will inspire me to use my stash, as well as try different designs.
As for the length of the video, it works for this project. But I love longer videos with your personality more at the forefront. I agree with Joanne H, that this works for less complicated projects, AND that YOU are doing a GREAT JOB! Thank you!

  • Ditto what Joanne and Janet said. This was great for this idea/project. Something more complicated might need to be a bit longer or slower speed when going over the scan and cut functions? Overall, I appreciate shorter videos to long. And, yes, Brother should know what a great job you do for them. I bought my scan n cut because of your tutorials!

  • Shorter works fine for this project but I agree with others that with a more detailed project I’d be lost pretty quickly.

  • I have long enjoyed your Scan n Cut videos. This shorter video was fine for this project but it was irritating to my eyes being so fast. I’d hate to try a more complicated project in that format. I agree with those who say why fix what isn’t broken!
