Hello!

BigSmile-500
I've been blogging Monday-Friday for almost a decade now.  As I'm sure you realize, it takes an enormous amount of time and energy to generate all the fresh content for this blog. But I've noticed a lack of comments, actions, and interactions lately.  I'm not sure why?  Perhaps social media is more of a draw these days?  Perhaps I've gone stale?

Whatever the reason, I've decided to stop posting on Fridays for a while and see how it goes.

I will still be posting tons of great FREE content Monday-Thursday.  "Art Journal Every Day" posts, which have traditionally been on Fridays, will simply migrate to a different day.

If you still need a Friday fix, my weekly newsletter hits inboxes every Friday afternoon.

Thanks for being a blog reader!

Julie

  • I get your blog posted emailed to me. I usually just read the email with my morning coffee. I rarely comment which is not fair to you and I apologize. But like now, I have one-eye open and need to start rushing around to get to work. I just wanted to thank you for all the effort you put into your blog. It is silently appreciated.

  • Know that there are lots of people out here who love reading your blog and take joy learning from you and being introduced to other artists on your blog. But, like so many others we hide in the woodwork and if I ever come out to comment, there is always someone who has said the same thing or similar enough to make anything I say redundant. Keep up the good work, Julie.

  • I read your blog every weekday morning at breakfast. It’s an inspiring way to start the day! For a while I hesitated to follow you on IG because I was afraid it would spoil my morning ritual. Four times a week is still a lot of blogging! I respect your decision and I’ll enjoy those four days/week of posts.

  • Good call, I read your blog every day but don’t always comment. I also follow along on Facebook and Instagram and I know how much work is involved in keeping them all going. I don’t know how you do it all, still do the art and have a young son. Glad you are going to take a day off, hopefully it gives you time for you! Thanks for all you do and share, it is appreciated even if we don’t always comment. 🙂

  • I have followed your blog for at least the lmast seven years, possibly longer, and it is one of my favourites, and I have learned a lot from it. However, I have only commented once or twice: I’m not a great one for commenting, so I do it rarely, but that doesn’t mean you are not appreciated! I’m amazed at how often you manage to blog. I can understand that it takes a lot of time, and you deserve Fridays off. Keep up the good work (except on Fridays of course!), it is much appreciated.

  • Julie, you’re truly amazing and I only wish I could get my batteries (and my muse) charged where you get yours charged! All you do and all you post is truly an inspiration. While it’s not an excuse I expect many are hitting that pandemic fatigue wall. It’s taken us through so Many stages and emotions but you’ve managed them all along with your own major family life change and you’ve done it with grace, energy, and artistry! Thank you!!

  • Julie, I’ve been following you for almost the whole decade and I consider your blog one of my top go-to reads. I so enjoy and get inspired by how you approach your creative life . I also follow you on Instagram and I will say it’s not the same. The tiny windows/tiny limits of mass social media don’t allow us to get to know the people behind the screens nearly as much as on big, bold personal platforms. With all that said, OF COURSE you should reduce the number of days you post! I’m in awe of your energy to post so much and reducing the number of days won’t affect the readers’ experience and will hopefully give you the time you need.
Finally, OF COURSE you feel less engagement here, because we readers rarely comment on blogs, which is an awful shame and I do wish there was a good way to stimulate conversation on blogs…mass social media sucked away comments to those tiny – easier – windows. But please know we are reading. And learning. And thinking. And creating—because of your work here. And I don’t think your work has the same affect on mass social media. You might get more interaction there, but if you didn’t have your blog no one would really know you. And that would be a shame.
THANK YOU for your work. You have made such a big difference in my life and I know in many others’ lives as well.

• I look forward to your blogs and have learned and been inspired by them. I even made comments once in a while. I think we are all
being buried in emails these days. I admire your energy and the amount of work you do to help us achieve our artistic goals.

  • Thank you for sending out bits of wisdom everyday! I always look at your blogs, glean what seems exciting for me, and admire the fact that you still have a life and family! I saw the giant banner recently – so fun! – but I also like seeing the cool old houses in the background. I remember the picture of your reconstruction inside. I have an old house, and appreciate your work!
Do what works for you, love your family, and create what is fun for you. If not, it all becomes work.

  • Your productivity always amazes me. Take a break. I tend to comment or like on your Twitter feed because it’s right there. I receive this document in email and rarely open it on the actual site which is why I don’t comment. I also figure you have so much going on that reading comments has to be onerous. Maybe not. I continue to absorb everything you post on here, Instagram, and Twitter. Take care of you and that super duper cute kid of yours.

I read your blog every single day over my lunch break – it is such a welcome & colorful escape to my work day. So, I will miss you on Fridays – but I do receive your newsletter, so that will help fill the void.
Thank you for the heads up, and thank you for doing what’s best for you. We all love and appreciate you, and want you to be a happy, healthy, creative Julie! <3

  • Wow! This is the most comments I’ve seen on one of your posts in a long time!
The reason I don’t comment is because I don’t notice you interacting with anyone who does post a comment and if you don’t have the time to interact with those who do leave comments, I’m not going to take the time to post a comment. I will give you credit that you have posted responses a few times. I think those who take the time to post want to feel their comments are at least read and appreciated. Although, I can’t speak for anyone except myself.
I do enjoy your blog posts and I understand the time it all takes. Kudos to you for knowing when you need to step back and take time back for yourself and your family.

  • Hi!
Im new at all this. I bought a Scan and Cut Dx125. I do quilting and make handbags. Im wondering how to use my scan and cut on materials that call for cutting on the fold? Can I fold the material and scan my pattern then erase the line to cut on the fold? Please advise me. Thank you.

  • Thank you Julie för all the art work you share and the inspiration you spread! I’ve been reading your blog for “ages” (9 years? 10 years?) but I seldom comment. I’m sorry for this. I will miss your Friday posts but I do support your choice and will continue follow you as long as you keep sharing.

  • Hey Julie, I still read your blog! I admit this past year has seen my comments on people’s blogs drop quite dramatically, cannot think why that would be lol, I guess that old pandemic situation is the main reason…..
I’ve had no excuse to to make art myself which I have done, I’ve just been a slacker about posting on my blog….
    Mea culpa.
I love what you do even though it’s not really my style of art making, those Gelli prints make me green with envy. I’ll try to be a better fan, promise!

  • Hi Julie, love your blog. I found it recently when trying to track down the artist who made the gorgeous large embroidered face I saw on Pinterest, only to discover it was Julie Fei Fan Balzer from Make it Artsy which my local public broadcasting station starting running a couple years ago (and which I never miss). I don’t work in the same mediums you do – yet! – but I always watch your show and follow your daily blog for the inspiration, encouragement and tips which I believe can apply to any form of creative expression. I plan to adapt your recent posts “A Formula for Making Art Quickly” and “10 Art Journaling Techniques” to the mediums I work in.
It hadn’t dawned on me that my not commenting would be interpreted as a lack of interest or appreciation for all the work it takes to maintain your blog (I generated content for a small city with a large government web site before I retired so I’ve got a clue). And in a recent post I saw a change in your style so I don’t think you’re getting “stale.” I don’t subscribe to any blogs just because I hate the clutter in my inbox, but I regularly check the dozen or so I follow, yours included. I personally don’t follow Instagram or other social media and have grumbled about the number of blogs that seem to be fading away in favor of that platform. I assume it’s quicker and easier for the artist, but I prefer the larger screen of my laptop over the smartphone access. (I know, I know, I know I can use Instagram on my laptop. I’m older but not a Luddite; I’m technologically adept but dislike social media for too many reasons, none of which anyone else probably cares about or needs to know.) My real argument is that I just prefer the more intimate format of blog posts. So I want to thank you for the treasure trove that is your blog (I’ll be making my way through the last 10 years of posts for quite a while yet, I think). I also support your choice to drop Fridays as you explore what works best for you personally and for your business model.

  • Ah. See. We are all out there reading your blog, but being lazy and not clicking through to comment. I have followed you for over a decade and love your posts in my inbox. But yes, Instagram has changed how we all interact, I think. Now you have so many more responsibilities and so much more going on on your site, I think that you have made a good decision for you.

  • Julie, I miss your podcasts with Mom, too! I drove across the state and back this week and checked twice for updates. I think our lives are starting to get “busier” again since many restrictions on the pandemic are being lifted. You have always been my go-to and my inspiration, will try to comment more! And you have to do what you have to do. You have a little one and a hubs now! 🙂

  • I am also one of the silent readers, I so enjoy your blogs, art, where-ever I follow it. I think its cool to take some time to yourself, and your life and family. A good decision, as we who love you, will continue to be inspired by you, no matter where and how often you post.

  • I join the ranks of the commenters who say they avidly read your blog, but rarely comment. You blog is the only one I faithfully read and it always inspires! Someday, when I am visiting my daughter in Boston, I want to include an in-person class with you. Your use of color is fantastic! Kudos to you for adjusting your time commitments… that’s additional inspiration for the rest of us to sometimes step back and reevaluate. Thank you.

  • I am a long time fan and blog reader of you. You introduced me to stencils (I have MANY of yours), gelli printing, art journaling, carving…along with all kinds of other bits and projects and fun ideas that you so FREELY share. I ALWAYS read your blog but am a sporadic commentor because I feel like social media is where a lot of people are looking for feedback. (Not me though) For some reason I can’t even see your Instagram posts anymore and I have no idea why so I am sure glad I still have your blog to rely on keeping up with what you are doing! Thank you for sharing all these years and enjoy your Fridays off!

  • You gone stale??? Oh, heavens no!! I enjoy the blog – a quick easy place to find stuff. But, I know for me that sometimes I’m not sure where I comment – the blog, a class, or IG. But, I don’t blame you for wanting to grab just a bit of well-deserved time for yourself and the fam.
