We are 10 days into The 100 Day Project.  As I mentioned before, I have been smushing together my #100DaysofArtBotanical with #februllage and I'm not sure that it's working for me.  I'll show you what I've done and then I'll talk about why I'm feeling a bit unsure about this mash up.

This was my first day, before #februllage started — so it's the only piece without collage:

1-mixedmedia-wm

Starting with this next piece, all of these contain collage and are in response to the daily prompts:

Let's talk about these pieces.

The good: I said that I wanted to try a wide variety of styles of creating botanicals and I have — drawing, stamping, cutting, collaging, and painting.

The problematic: I am feeling a little bit stifled by having to include collage in all of my pieces and I'm finding the prompts frustrating rather than inspiring.

After some thought — and giving myself permission to quit #februllage — I'm feeling like I need a point-of-view adjustment. I think I'm approaching these pieces in the same way that I always do.  I believe that all art making is problem solving.  And I need to change the way I'm solving problems.  Or at least experiment with other methods.  I think that may alleviate some of the trouble I'm having.  It's scary, though.  I have methods and processes that work for me.  They're time tested.  It's scary to do something new.  But I think it will ultimately be (a) freeing and (b) really good for me.

Thanks for stopping by!

  • Very perceptive of you to have identified the real issue. And brave to acknowledge fear of failure and move forward. And everybody always thinks it’s about the art! Art practice is so personal and revealing that the issue is usually as much about exposing our inner demons as it is about technique. Bravo for you!

  • Julie, You are so talented! I am not a fan of the first one, but love the rest!! Sorry you are having trouble with your problem solving. Can you not just enjoy art for art? I think of it as a release and just an enjoyable time. Of course, it’s not my livelihood either. I enjoy all of your work and thank you for allowing me to enjoy it!

  • I am part of this project, too. I am not using any prompts other than to have each work of Art have a pattern and repetition, and that I use some form of mixed media. I don’t see why you need all the names processes in every piece. Collage could be in some but not necessarily all of your work. Your project title seems pretty flexible, so perhaps you only need to interpret it more broadly? Love how spirited your pieces are.

  • I love your first piece as it is so painterly. I too am participating in the 100dayproject and also came to the conclusion what I started with wasn’t working for me so I have changed my project after 7 days. I felt stuck and not really into what I was doing. It is absolutely fine to change things up, it is the daily art making that is my goal.

  • Julie – these have been a highlight of my Instagram feed. I love each and every one of these – there’s so much to drink in, in each piece! I am happy to hear that you’re giving yourself permission to separate the 2 endeavors – go with your gut! I’m in a small art group, and it’s interesting how people either love or hate prompts. I understand how they can be helpful to some and completely blocking to others. So, I support your decision, and am excited for you to stick with your original plan of 100 botanical pieces.

  • Julie, I think the prompts are a restraint to your own inner artist voice.
Your first Botanical piece I’d lovely, but not in the style of those that come later.
Do what makes you feel free and draws on your innate talent. Trust yourself….
