The 100 Day Project begins on Sunday (January 31).  Are you planning to join in?  Have you picked your topic yet?

Here are some ideas of subjects that might be fun to tackle for 100 days:

Here are some tips from my own experience:

  • Choose a wide enough subject to give yourself creative space.
  • Choose a narrow enough subject to give yourself focus.
  • Choose something you either love or want to improve at.  It's best if it can be both!
  • Choose something that will take you less than 30 minutes a day to do, photograph, and post about.
  • You don't have to finish something every single day.  YOU get to set the parameters of your project.
  • Give yourself grace.  100 days is a goal, not a requirement.
  • Create a "kit" for your project.  You don't want to have to start from scratch every single day.

I have settled — and I use the term loosely because I'm fully capable of changing my mind at the last minute — on 100 Days of Botanical Art.  If you'd like to read about why I've chosen 100 Days of Botanical Art, I'm sharing a bit about it in the weekly newsletter, which will hit subscriber's inboxes on Friday.

Thanks for stopping by!

  • I am planning to do the 100 day project and my topic is animals. I love drawing animals, but still find them challenging. And I want to learn watercolors so I am going to draw animals and then use watercolors to add color.

  • I would love to do a 100 day project, but I just cannot find the balance between simple & worthwhile. Julie, you know the 9×9 simple collage-grid you suggested in the Livestream this past weekend? I took that and turned it into a page of about 45 squares and rectangles, that took me about 3 sittings to fill, LOL.
I think your advice about less than 30 minutes for project + post is so wise. I’d love to participate, but I think I need to learn the art of not getting carried away first…do you offer a class on that? Haha 🙂

  • I know this is going to sound stupid, but set a timer.  It really works.  And worthwhile can simply mean: I enjoy making art.  So anything fits into that category!

  • I am doing 100 days of scrapbooking. I’m quite behind on my many scrapbook layouts and albums. I hope to get some of it completed and have fun doing it.

  • I need to pick something easy. I still have my carve December ‘kit’ under my table, and I’d like to make a set of alphabet stamps and of numbers; perhaps I could carve one a day. But that only gives me about 1/3, unless I do both upper and lower case, moving closer to 2/3rds. But, then I’d love to attempt some other carvings – octopus, whales, etc. Oh, but then I’d love to work on some sketching and watercolor. That could be something easy to keep up with. Oh dear. It’s so hard. But, I was so proud of myself for doing carve December, maybe I could do this??

  • I am planning,on doing 100 days of pulling a tarot card a day and lettering out the name of the card. If I get carried away I might even sketch the card itself….

  • Love this, and now that I’m working from home and my usual business travel is canned, it’s possible as it never was before. I think I will continue in the new sketchbook I’ve used for the 31 days of creativity, since I usually work across all different sketchbooks and rarely fill one completely. I most often use watercolors or pen and ink in my sketchbooks since easily portable, but I’ve been dying to explore mixed media and my first couple attempts have been trash-worthy ;). So perhaps mixed media mountains for me? I’m obsessed with mountain ranges around the world and have climbed in many. I have countless photo sources to work from.

  • Thank you for getting back to me Julie 🙂 A timer doesn’t sound stupid at all – but it sounds like pressure, LOL. But really, I do think it could be beneficial in curing my carried-away-conundrum. And you’re right – if I’m enjoying it, it is worthwhile!
