Art Journal Every Day: Four Types of Sketchbooks

AJEDHeader2020

If you're new to Art Journal Every Day, the concept is simple: It's a commitment to take ten minutes each day to do something in your art journal.  No need to finish anything or even like it.  It's about making the time to nourish your creativity every day!  If you have the time to flip through your phone, you have the time to Art Journal Every Day.  If you'd like to share what you make, use the hashtag #artjournaleveryday so that we can all take a peek.  You can find new Art Journal Every Day posts here on the blog most Fridays.  The archives go back to the first Art Journal Every Day post in 2010.

Have you got an hour?  Personally, I watched this presentation over three days while eating lunch.  It was worth it and I wanted to share it with you:

Side note: I loved seeing Hopper's sketchbooks and they reminded me of my visit to the Truro Historical Society Highland House, where a copy of the Hopper painting discussed in this video, was on display.  You can see a photo of it in my blog post on that visit.

My favorite part of this lecture was the categories of sketchbooks Charles Ritchie (the speaker) invented:

  • sketchbook
  • journal
  • ledger
  • manuscript

According to his categories, for most of my art life, I've kept a journal. Here are some examples:

As I mentioned on Wednesday, I'm very interested in jumping into a sketchbook practice.  It's something I've done a little of in the past and mostly in museums…

…but I'd like to do more!

What type of sketchbooking do you do?

Thanks for stopping by!
