This is one of those projects that started one way and then morphed into something else entirely. I wanted to draft a pattern for an easy summer dress to wear. After I made the pattern, I decided to sew it out of muslin before I actually moved on to "real" fabric. As it turned out, I didn't have any muslin, but I did have some Kona PFD (prepared for dyeing) fabric. In the absence of muslin, I decided to use it.
Once I put the "muslin" version of the dress together, it wasn't quite right and yet I found I couldn't bring myself to throw it in the garbage. So, I figured I'd throw it into the sink with some dye and see what happened. I didn't pre-wash it and I didn't soda ash it. I figured that if all the dye washed out, I would just soda ash it and try again. After all, if you never try things, you'll never know what the possibilities are. And anyway, it was a dress that didn't really work out, so not a big deal.
I piled up the ice and dye…
The colors are definitely lighter than when I pre-wash and use soda ash. The green seems to have not stuck at all. And, again, it's not the quite the fit I was looking for. But I will wear it and I will make adjustments to the dress pattern so that the next one is "just right." After all, I even took the time to put pockets into this thing:
And just so you know, this is my first time drafting a pattern. I truly believe that the best way to learn something is by doing it. I took a two-day class two years ago and made my very first garment from a pre-existing pattern. It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. I've made a few shirts since then, but this was a big leap forward. More to come!
Thanks for stopping by!

P.S. I'm seriously debating overdyeing this to make it a little bit more intense. Thoughts?
I like the soft colors for a summer dress. I have clothes like this (that didn’t come out as planned) and so I wear them around the house *only* – ha ha.
If you do decide to over-dye, just remember to not mix your colors too much and end up with mud.

So very interesting! What about embelishing the dress in other ways? Fabric paints and stencils? A little embroidery or beading around the neck? More fabric for more hem? No limits. How fun!

Julie, I think it is pretty. And I love that you made your own dress pattern. If you want to over dye it, you can over ice dye it, or over dye with another color but be careful about making mud like Michele mentioned, or what I love to do (can’t remember if you’ve done indigo) but indigo dye over it. The results are amazing! One shirt was one of my very first ice dyed shirt from years ago (now it’s one of my favorite shirts), and a couple ice dyed pieces that the colors didn’t look good with my complexion. OMG! I have a post on my blog about this showing before and after pics of the shirts and a poncho. If you’re interested in seeing my results and how I saved those shirts and poncho the post is called Over Dyeing with Indigo. So excited that you are really into ice dyeing!

I think the fit is a bit of an optical illusion. The way the three colors line up in wide stripes, the top blue sort of expands visually in a way that, pulling the photo really close, the dress itself doesn’t seem to. That big stripe of pink is the problem. I think you should do another dye before you adjust the fit. Blend the colors together more so it flows from shoulder to hem easier. I have a feeling that will change the way you see it, and change the way you want to adjust it.

Yes, go for the redyeing! I had a similar experience with my first attempt at ice dyeing–no soda ash. The re-dye is waiting for lockdown to be over–it happened just as my friend and I were planning a session WITH soda ash. I was going to re-dye my dress. Oh, well, eventually!

I’d wear it for a while. Light colors are nice in the summer, and it’ll get softer with the washing. If you’re still not crazy about later in the summer, I’d over-dye it for the fall.

I love the colors, and the placement on your body in particular. I would not over- dye it unless you find that it never comes out of the closet because the colors are not you. I have noticed that my color choices shifted, subtly, through different periods of my life. Maybe a couple of pieces that are a little brighter will be a nice addition to your baby/toddler mom phase.

I like the colors. I would wear it as is,then when you want to change it … overdye it. I am so impressed that you are making your own patterns. When I sew, I’ve been lucky if the clothing fits as it should & that was my sewing with a pattern. But, if I spent the time practicing (as you suggest), then I would likely get better results.

Yes, go with the over-dye. What do you have to lose? Keep playing just like you do with a Gelli print!

As I sit here in my ice-dyed shirt, a few notes…. I’m surprised you got that much color without the soda ash! Since it was PFD, the pre-scouring was probably not necessary anyway. Pockets – a must-have! Congrats on doing that too. As to the fit, the Kona is fairly heavy cotton and won’t have much drape, so that’s a factor, and it probably won’t change much even with repeated washings. I vote for a quick overdye, maybe in Mulberry, although that will mud up the small amt of yellow. With soda ash, whether in a bucket or another ice-dye job. If you can get your ice smaller, it will give a different texture, which would be interesting. Love your bath decor!

I think it’s a really cute dress. If you want it more intense why don’t you paint it? You have experience doing that and you could do a really fun painted pattern.
