Let’s Talk about Organizing Art Supplies

Last weekend I asked my instagram friends to share tips or questions about art supply organization. There was so much good stuff in that conversation that I wanted to share it here on my blog too!

Also: I did a week-long series on art supply organization years ago.  You can find it HERE.

What are your best tips for keeping everything organized?  I'd love to know!

  • Excellent adventure – thank you very much for a good analysis
    … three things.
    1. I like your Rainbow color order- I have used palette color order since I figured it out – rainbow simpler as it has fewer colors but I can’t change now. And your mesh storage drawers – I use almost the same system but mine have max 4 drawers – and a little black plastic part that keeps fall ing off that I am not sure what it is…
    2. favorite art supply I have not seen you mention – is my long armed stapler – not expensive but a life saver at times then trying to staple into the middle of a book magazine that is wide.
That and my crop-a-dial I can not live without…
    3. organizing rule the guides me – everything had A place – a home – and should be stored in its home. hole punches – tapes – scissors – etc etc – all the things we all have multiples of – all should have A home where I can always find one of them . Anyone who borrows and does not replace is never forgiven – sorry.

  • Hi Julie,
This is a little off topic as far as organizing our supplies-but its about organizing our sewing for our little ones-I sent you an email but since I figure you get tons it may be awhile before you come across mine-I have a tip for Mommies and their children-and having a MASK for safety at this time also. First, I love everything about you-have enjoyed you for years-I’m not really on Social Media but want to share an idea my Adult daughter came up with tonight. We were chatting about my frustration making kids masks for their safety too-since babies/toddlers/kids are all different sizes and also tender skinned. She had taken one of her hair head bands and put it around her head and onto her face as a mask for her walk-then suggested using tee shirts for the little ones since its a soft, stretchy, no need to sew fabric-also can be many sizes depending on where you would cut the circle piece from-including the sleeve of a tee shirt for baby faces-even using long sleeve men tees for different size heads and little faces. Please share this with all Mommies so that all our little ones can be safe at this time too. A very happy Grandma (Wanted to include a photo but couldn’t figure out how)

  • Hi Again Julie,
Without being able to include a photo I’m hoping this made sense about the tee shirt use for children as a mask for them – depending on where you would take the 2″/3″ width circle cut from a tee shirt sleeve for a babies face -or a larger 4″/5″ cut from a kids shirt for a toddler -and a mans tee sleeve cut for fitting for a older child – that would be how you can get a good fit for any different size child. As all adult masks are a standard size-and sewing one for a child doesn’t always fit well or feel good on their soft skin -I think this idea my daughter has is perfect for all our little ones.

  • brilliant idea, even thought the authorities are saying a mask is not necessary if you are healthy, I would use this idea if I absolutely had to go out just now. thanks for sharing

  • Organized, oh yeah, I want like with like and easy to find. Out in the open is ideal for me, not possible in my set up. Sure can have a mess but easy to put all supplies away when everything has a place.

  • Hi Julie,
Checking your blog is a fun dopamine hit for me, Monday through Friday mornings—I check it every day and get that hit! I want to let you know that I appreciate it more than ever during this stressful period. Thank you for continuing to put out content while taking care of an infant, a business, and yourself. I hope you and your family will stay well.

  • Hi Julie,
Checking your blog is a fun dopamine hit for me, Monday through Friday mornings—I check it every day and get that hit! I want to let you know that I appreciate it more than ever during this stressful period. Thank you for continuing to put out content while taking care of an infant, a business, and yourself. I hope you and your family will stay well.

  • Julie, this was very helpful and I really appreciate the pictures!!! although I am late reading this. I’m curious about your cling stamp storage idea which is genious! In your caption u said “jewel Case” aka empty cd cases… so if I were to go to Amazon, let’s say, do I search for clear cd cases of jewel cases… and what size do you recommend?
Also, I’m hoping you can tell me the name of a stencil of yours that I saw on the back of an older copy of cloth, paper, scissors which I really loved. The stencil was two hands, with a heart on the palms…? I’d appreciate any help you can offer in narrowing down your amazing collection of stencils,
