20 Art-Related Things to Do While You’re Stuck at Home

Chances are pretty good that you're stuck at home right now.  No worries. There are plenty of art-related things that you can do!

20todo-wm

  1. Make art.  Stupid and obvious, but it can be hard to get going.  Go do it!
  2. Check out YouTube tutorials.  Watch them.  Binge them.  And do it guilt free.  The Frugal Crafter has hundreds of crafty videos to watch on her channel!
  3. Take out that new tool, new paint, new thing you got and never used.  Use it.  I am guilty of this.  I suspect we all are.
  4. Read an art book.  It could be a biography of a famous artist or a how-to book.
  5. Take an online art class.  Learn something new from the safety of your home!  Almost every online teacher offers some free classes, in case you don't want to spend any money.
  6. Art journal.  Every day.  For just 10 minutes a day.  Here's a post with suggestions to get started.
  7. Reorganize your art space.  Waaaay back in 2012, I did a week-long series of posts on organizing your stash and your space.  Read it here.
  8. Make papers for collage.  Whenever I do this, I lose track of time.  I could spend months just making pretty papers!  Here's a video to kick you off!
  9. Buy art supplies online.  On my current wish list is this paint for textiles like leather and this pen, which is supposed to be water-resistant when dry. When they are delivered, see suggestion #3 on this list.
  10. Make things with a friend or friends via Google Hangouts or Zoom Conferencing.  Both offer free group video conferencing.
  11. Tackle a new art skill.  Work on it every day for the next few weeks.
  12. Go through your Pinterest boards and organize them so it's easy to find the things you've pinned when you want them.  My suggestion is organize them the way your brain works.  If you are looking for "that painting tutorial," then you should have a board called "painting tutorials."  If you're looking for "that painting tutorial Julie did," then you should have a board called "Julie tutorials."  Make it easy for your brain.
  13. Try figure drawing.  This YouTube channel broadcasts free model sessions.  Warning: The models are nude.  If that's offensive to you, please don't click through the link.
  14. Purge, purge, purge.  Marie Kondo your art supplies.  If it isn't useful or doesn't bring you joy, donate it.
  15. Read art/craft blogs.  There are so many talented people out there pouring their good ideas into the internet for free!  I like this blog and this one.
  16. Listen to an art podcast. Obviously, I think mine is the best, but I also like this one and this one.
  17. Carve a stamp.  Or two.  It's no secret that I love stamp carving and you can check out my book or online classes on the subject.
  18. Make a list of all of the art projects you want to do.  Sometimes it's hard to start working on an art project because you're overwhelmed with ideas.  A list can help clarify things for you.  Once the list is done, see suggestion #1 on the list.
  19. Visit world famous museums through their online virtual tours.  See the highlights from the comfort of your couch!
  20. Buy original art online.  Think of all the money you're saving by not eating out or going to the movies.  Go ahead and splurge on a piece from your favorite artist and know that you're supporting a small business.

And as an addendum to suggestion #5, I am offering a FREE online class called "The Two-Week Art Journal."  Over fourteen days, you'll make an art journal and try a variety of art experiments in its pages.  It's going to be awesome!  Sign-up for free HERE.

Thanks for stopping by!

  • Thank you so much Julie. I have been having a hard trying to get started. I do have several projects I can work on and perhaps using the approach of setting goals to have them completed by the time this crisis is over will help me motivate myself to get started. Also the once-a-day approach is good to get in the habit of doing. thanks so much for the encouragement and for the free 14 day class.
