I've decided to once more attempt the 100 Day Project.
In case you haven't heard of it, #The100DayProject is a free art project that takes place online. Every spring, thousands of people all around the world commit to 100 days of exploring their creativity. Anyone can join. The idea is simple: choose a project, do it every day for 100 days, and share your process on Instagram with the hashtag #The100DayProject.
My first attempt at this project was back in 2017. I did 100 15-minute faces. In essentials, I set a timer for 15 minutes each day and created a face — drawing, painting, collage, monoprinting — any technique or style was fair game. Here are a few of those faces:
Then in 2018 I decided to do 100 Days of Art Tweets. Here are screenshots of some of those tweets:
Here's what I've learned from my previous 100 Day Project experiences:
- 100 days is a lot of days. Like, A LOT of days. It's unrelenting and you have to really love whatever you choose to do.
- Giving myself wider parameters makes the project easier for me — for example: 100 days of painting is a lot easier to do than 100 days of hot pink gouache landscapes. That said, wider parameters also allow me to wiggle out of pushing myself beyond discomfort — which is how you improve! So for me, it's about striking a balance of making it open enough but not too open.
- For me, the only reason to do the 100 day project is to get better at something. Both years I did the project, I was better (and faster) at the end than I had been at the beginning. The year I tweeted I learned that, generally speaking, my audience is not a twitter audience, which was good information.
- It really helps to think about how much time you're willing to commit to this project every. single. day. It's not just the time of making the thing — there's also time involved with photographing and posting. Sharing is part of the project.
Keeping all of the above in mind for 2019, I've decided to do 100 Days of Words + Art. Unlike previous years, I don't plan to finish something every single day. Instead, I'm promising myself to work on the project every day for 100 days. I'd like to spend less than 30 minutes a day on this project each day. My goal is to end the project with at least 25 finished pieces that mix words and art together. That's finishing a piece every 3-4 days.
I'm excited for a new approach to an old project.
How about you? The 100 Day Project begins on April 7, 2020. Will you be joining in?

Well, I’m 99% convinced to do the 100 Day Project. It will be my first time so that’s why I have trepidations. I think I have a better game plan now after reading your blog post, so, thanks!

Love your 100 days of faces! I am thinking of a100 day of mini collage. I just started paper collaging and love it so maybe a mini project every day. The trick will be to keep it small. I like the idea of setting a timer.

Hmm…. every year I think I should do the 100 day challenge. My problem has been having a too narrow parameter. With being in lockdown this year here in NZ maybe I should try again.

Yes, 100 days of arting sounds like something I can do. But can I? Mini like small sounds good. Not too small though. I think 3×5 ought to be about right. Time to spend, hmm we’ll have to see how long it takes to do the art and photo and posting. Maybe start out with timer set for an hour. See if too much or too little or just right.

Think I’ll try this year also. Someone said a real key to getting thru this is leave all the stuff you need out on the table, or at least in a box you can grab and quickly unpack. Much easier to go do it when its right there. Think I’ll do small sewn fabric and paper collages on old photos. Love making and using them, and I have lots of old photos to use up.

I am passionate about drawing, painting, mono printing on paper and fabric the tropical plants and flowers around me., and would like to place me (through stencil or ?) in this environment as well. It always takes me more than one day, so thank you for sharing your strategy of allowing yourself a bit more time to get to a “finished” piece. I will participate.

I finally finished the 100 day project last year – but it was after i had analysed my failure in the past.
I felt like a failure if I did not post every day, so I posted every few days
I live in the real world and I have priorities that are more important than an instagram challenge. I did more pages when I was motivated – so that on the days when life got in the way – I had something to show
I was clear at the outset that I had no intention of being perfect – there is no perfect, so my 100 days lasted longer than 100 days
Just to show that I actually achieved my aim – I posted a slideshow of my pages at the end.
I was really pleased with my book when I finished and pleased that I stuck it out. I realised that my art was for myself – not for any audience and that likes and comments are nice but they cannot be my real aim

I have never done a 100 day project so maybe it’s time. Being realistic, I think l should do 100 ART. My first thought was collage, but even if I only narrow it down to ART, I would push myself.
