I got a bunch of questions about tar paper after my post last week. I am not a tar paper expert. Here's what I know:
- Tar paper is a building material. It is primarily used for roofing. You can read the wikipedia page about it here.
- The tar paper I have doesn't have a smell.
- My understanding is that tar paper made before 1970 had asbestos in it, but the modern version does not.
- I learned about tar paper from Ardith Goodwin when she was a guest on Make It Artsy.
- You can find some information about using soap as a resist agent on tar paper in this blog post by Phyl.
- As for its archival qualities, I'm sure it has none. That's not something I worry about. My work is not going to be hanging in a museum 100 years from now and if it is, just remember that Matisse, Rothko, and many other famous artists used tons of non-archival materials which people have figured out how to preserve.
I hope that helps answer some questions! Thanks for stopping by!
I am so excited to see this! Thanks for posting it, Julie. I have a whole roll of tar paper, which I use for ceramic patterns. Now, I can think of all kinds of projects to use it.
