I stumbled upon a very interesting looking product yesterday.  It's called "The Magic Mirror" and it allows you to trace images.  This 40-second video explains what it does:

Artists have always traced images — tracing paper, carbon paper, transparencies, light boxes, and even projectors. This just seems like another — and cleverly simple — version.  But I still have lots of questions:

  • Does it work?
  • Does it have to be an image on a phone or tablet?
  • What is that "mirror" made of?
  • Was it inspired by Vermeer?
  • Why can't I find anything about it when I search the internet?

What do you think?  Like it?  Hate it?  Would you use it?

Thanks for stopping by!

  • If you google “tracing mirror” or tablet tracing mirror, there are a few results. It’s probably a gadget I’d try but maybe not use often.

  • My son had something similar when he was 6ish- so around 2003. We still have it and it worked great. It was for full size paper, 8 1/2 x 11, so you could trace from books and magazines. He would create coloring pages and practice drawing after he traced.
I recently saw something similar on HSN from We R Memory Keepers.

  • I would love to give it a try. It looks “techie” and interesting…definitely gets my curiosity juices flowing. If it works as well as it’s advertised, I would use it a lot. I don’t think I would just buy it to have it. Trying it before buying would be a must for me. I would also like to be able to use it with non-tech things like books, papers, etc. Thanks for the heads-up on the product. I’ll search for a opportunity to actually use it and if it works, it is something on which I would seriously consider spending my money.

  • It is just like the Phantom Liner used by calligraphers for lining dark envelopes when a light box is not strong enough. So would allow you to trace on dark papers when a light box would not. May still be easier to use tracing paper like Saral that comes in colors that show on dark paper.

  • Gadgets like these have been around for many years. Yeah, I had one back in the 60’s. The picture is not projected onto paper. By looking through the “mirror/reflective” plastic, you see the picture and the drawing paper underneath it. It becomes a kind eye-hand coordination thing to look through the plastic ‘lense’ and draw on the paper. It’s just a newer design to work with a phone, but you could probably use a mirror film on any sheet of acrylic or glass and do the same thing.
