Yesterday, I had my first knitting class.
I once tried to knit a scarf in eighth grade. Never finished it and kind of assumed that I couldn't knit. But, I wanted to give it another go. So, I signed up for a local class. Soooo fun! The teacher is a little bit scattered and doesn't give great instructions, but I'm already hooked (no crochet pun intended). I came home from class and looked up some knitting videos. This was my favorite:
So, you may be wondering why I'm taking a class if the instructor isn't that great and there are free instructions on YouTube?! Well, I enjoy in-person classes for a few reasons:
- I enjoy learning new skills (or reinforcing old skills).
- I like mixing with other creative people.
- I find direct feedback from a live instructor enormously helpful. Often they can help me with an issue very quickly — sometimes even before I'm aware that it's a problem.
- Taking a class forces me to block out the creative time in my schedule. No one tries to impose on your creative time when you say: I'm going to class.
- I love being able to ask an instructor all of my questions and have them answered in real time!
I'm looking forward to next week's class (and hoping to make a lot of progress on this hat in the meantime). In fact, I brought my knitting with me to a lecture last night. I really enjoyed having the hand work!
So, here's my question to all of you experienced knitters: Do you have a knitting tip you're willing to share with me?
Thanks for stopping by!
My scarves go on for miles and miles…
Hahaha !!!
…..maybe I should sign up for a class too ?

A couple of quick tips
1. Be patient with yourself. It takes a little while to build up muscle memory.
2. Learn to read your knitting.
3. There are only 2 basic stitches in knitting- knit and purl.
Check out Marly BIrd on you tube- she has a great series on teaching her mother to knit.
Very Pink is also a good reference.
4. Enjoy

I agree with Carole, join Ravelry. Also have a couple of reference books handy.
Stitch ‘n Bitch: The Knitter’s Handbook by Debbie Stoller is packed with information, plus the author has a quite a sense of humor.

I’ve been knitting for years. I knit hats in the round, scarves, and dish clothes. they spark joy. I look at socks, mittens, and sweaters not for me. I have written instructions for the casting on I like, because I can never remember how to. my tip is knit what you enjoy, don’t sweat it if you dont ever knit a sweater or socks, enjoy. Haha not much different than what you say about art.

I have been knitting for over 59 years and recently bought one of those bowls with an S curve in the side (mine is wood but some are ceramic.) the bowl holds the yarn ball so it doesn’t roll under your chair, etc. I love it and don’t know why I never bought one before. It is quite lovely and keeps the cats from stealing my yarn. LOL

I have found that I prefer crochet over knitting-seems you get results quicker with crochet, lol. While I too purchased one of those knitting bowls, the best thing I have found for keeping my working yarn in are those big plastic pretzel/snack tubs! I just leave the lid off while working, snap it back on when done. One good tip is too NOT purchase yarn unless you have a specific project in mind. I have tons of random skeins that are too small to really make anything. One day I may do one of those scrap yarn blankets or scarves. Have fun,and don’t stress if the first few things don’t come out perfect, remember it’s a handmade item, some imperfections are OK!

I think I wish I had known about European knitting before I got so heavily into the other as it may be faster and less obvious during a lecture. Not too late since instructions are on YouTube

Hey Julie. I’m an addicted crocheter but I’ve tried knitting over and over just out of curiousity and always failed (because starting something new isn’t as easy as what you know. I found a woman at othercrochetnook(dot)com who presented a very easy intro to knitting a sweater in four simple panels. Stay with me. She had us only use the garter stitch over and over. One stitch which is basically doing the “knit” stitch. Without all the stress of learning more than one stitch (and doing something 10,000 times to really learn it — ha ha—), it’s doable. I’m still going back to it but it’s fun, not frustrating. Hope this helps!

Curious, when I open your email there is now an advertisement. And the first one yesterday was for marijuana. ??? Is this a glitch in “MY” computer or have you gone commercial in your postings? Another ad today also. It is really nice NOT to have the advertisements in one of my favorite newsletters.

Yarn shops are very dangerous. The colors and textures and possibilities for “things” you can make is a giant rabbit-hole. I say this as a yarn hoarder. Well, I am a hoarder of tons of things like books, beads, paper, and will die with so many stashes that it is embarrassing! Of course, that doesn’t stop me. 🙂 Seriously, I learned to knit when I was about 9 and it has always been a love of mine. Ravelry is one of the best places to go online. Make sure that when you buy a yarn that jumps right into your hands, you buy enough for a project and check the dye lots to make sure that they are all the same. Now, you go! It won’t take long for the muscle memory to set in!

Knitting is wonderful! I am a “process knitter” rather than a “product knitter”. I don’t much care what the end product is – I enjoy knitting. Also I always use circular needles because they are shorter and my arms don’t get tired and you are much less likely to ever drop the stitches.
Have fun!!!

Yes, I have started putting ads at the beginning of my daily e-mails. You can avoid the ads by visiting my website every day instead of getting the e-mail delivered to your inbox. There are no ads on the blog itself. The reason for the ads: It costs me $1200/year to pay for the service that e-mails my blog out. Ads are a way for me to get a portion of that money back. I would rather not charge readers like you. I hope you can get used to the ads. If not, I understand. Feel free to unsubscribe.

I would rather not charge readers like you. I hope you can get used to the ads. If not, I understand. Feel free to unsubscribe.

I love knitting, and I felt that one of the things that helped me was learning to knit with both hands (English vs. continental). If you can hold the yarn in either hand, you can do a lot of other new things. It’s especially good in fair isle knitting.

I agree that getting set up on Ravelry from the start is fantastic. You can keep track of what yarn you have and can link to the pattern you want to use or you can search for projects based on how much yarn you have. It’s also very inspirational. I have started including lint pieces into my mixed media art. Happy knitting and don’t be afraid of tinking (taking something apart) see if your teacher will help you out with this

Gauge Swatches do not lie. And make them, wash them and keep them. Once you get comfortable with knitting, we can talk spinning… remember those sheep we drew and painted last year?

Yeah! I love knitting and often use YouTube for help. I have found that there is tons of content but not all teachers speak my language. If the instructions seem too complicated or fussy I just look for another video. Once I find someone who speaks my language I book mark them for future reference. I have also taken a couple of really good classes on Craftsy that have really helped with reading patterns, little helpful tips, etc. Happy knitting! PS try to avoid yarn with out a specific project in mind!

I did not read all of the comments, so maybe these two tips have already been mentioned:
1. It is best to always use a circular knitting needle, even if you don’t knit in rounds. That way, most of the weight of your growing piece will be distributed on the elastic part of the needle and so rest on your lap. With straight needles you are lifting the piece with every stitch – not good for your hands and arms.
2. If your knitting project includes identical parts, like two sleeves for example, don’t knit one after the other, but both at the same time (on the same circular needle). This guarantees equal length. Besides, I find it extremely boring to finish one part and then repeat the exact same thing.
Hope this helps. Have fun!

An afterthought after I have gone through the above comments: I don’t quite agree with buying yarn only for a specific project. There is nothing like a stash of yarn (think of colours alone!) to inspire a knitter. Although, of course, this method could be a little wasteful.

You will love knitting. It just takes practice. I would recommend you start with small projects until you feel more comfortable. That is the first craft I learned. I had an older lady from Germany who lived next door and she taught me to knit when I was about 8….way too many years ago. I knit differently than a lot of people. Someone once told me that I was taught the “continental” way. I cast on totally different from what the video is showing you. I also hold my year in my left hand with my left hand needle. This allows me to knit much faster. Have fun and enjoy!

If you like knitting, try both continental and English. See if you can master both, it comes in handy, and take your time learning. Have a little patience with yourself!
I am a addicted sock knitter, I prefer DPN’s (double pointed needles) and circular needles (though not for socks).
In Holland I learned to knit with the yarn from the outside towards the center. Here they pull yarn from the inside, you have to rewind your yarn though. Otherwise the yarn untwist during knitting and the knitted product will look weird (can’t exactly explain without pictures).
Ravelry is a good place to explore. I like Garnstudio a lot, all their patterns are free and their yarn is excellent quality. Plus they have lots or tutorials.
Most important: enjoy, expect to get addicted, expect more items to hoard (yarn, needles, more yarn), keep yarn out of the sun and away from moths (plastic boxes, preferably stackable for hoarding). Enjoy!
When do we get to see your finished work?

When I taught knitting, I always had my students use circular needles because you can’t prop them. When you prop them (maybe against your belly) you have very tight tension and that is hard and not fun. With circular needles, they cannot be propped while you learn the stitches and tension regulation.

Spend time learning techniques such as having consistent tension, proper swatching, try to have knit and purl rows be the same size (row height), and learning how to fix your mistakes without ripping everything out down to the mistake. I recommend Patty Lyons for these – she has a blog and is on Facebook and will give little tips plus she also has DVD’s and online courses with I think Interweave and Craftsy(not sure if they migrated to Bluprint). I was able to take an in-person class with her and she helped me to make my knitted ‘fabric’ be more consistent and better overall. Make plenty of small projects such as hot pot pads and washcloths while you are learning new techniques. Even after your class is over, continue to visit your Local Yarn Store (LYS) to ask questions and receive advice – they are your best resource for things such as helping you to match needle type to yarn (some yarns are best to knit with metal needles, some with wooden, etc.). Buy quality yarn that makes you happy and enjoy yourself!

You will love knitting. With your creativity, you’ll find tons of things to do with it. If you put the word out to your neighbors that you are trying to learn to knit, you’ll be amazed at how many people nearby are knitters. Your local extension service can give you names of people in your local community who are willing to teach you. The extension service is a great resource for people with lots of experience and who are willing to share their talents. These people are usually teachers for the 4-H programs in your area so they will rarely be disorganized or scattered. Good luck and have fun. I can’t wait to see what you can do with it.

Don’t be afraid. If you can knit and you can purl you can do just about anything. Just try. Also nice fiber makes all the difference in the world.

Some great tips here. The circular knitting tip may be the best from my standpoint. Although I have a harder time holding those types of needles than regular ones. I also do continental style knitting. I learned that to make it easier on my hands. I mostly do scarves. I have to check out the sweater idea. Buying yarn is fun and addictive! One thing I wanted to mention related to muscle memory is I learned how to bead before I learned knitting and crocheting. My mother was a crocheter and she pointed out to me that because I already did beading as handwork the knitting and crocheting would be easier to learn and she was correct. Have fun with the knitting and share projects! Thanks for sharing about the ads in your emails. I sort of figured that was the reason why. I always appreciate I can read your full blog post in an email without having to go to the internet. That has been my preferred way to read blogs.

Welcome to the club! Two things I always tell people I teach … and I think someone else has probably already mentioned it. Practice! muscle memory takes time to establish and one lesson isn’t going to do it. Try to practice a little bit everyday while your learning.
The second thing – don’t get hung up on on what’s “right” there’s lots of ways to knit & no two knitters are exactly the same. Do what feels comfortable and keeps you knitting. As long as your consistent and getting fabric you’re doing it right!
Knitting is a whole new rabbit hole to go down. I’m really excited for you.

There only four steps- stick it, wrap it, capture and release! I used this to teach knitting in a men’s prison and it worked like a charm. Repeate this phrase over in your head as you knit and you will be knitting in no time!

Sorry, I cannot agree with your point about circular needles. It depends on how you knit, which needle is best for you. I definitely prefer straight needles and only go to circular when I absolutely have to. Since I hold the left needle stationary balanced on my leg/hip joint, straight needles are the BEST. You can’t do that with circular needles.
So to Julie, you do what is most comfortable for you. Both types of needles have their advantages and disadvantages.
Agree to knitting identical parts at the same time. But I’m kind “over” fitted in sleeves, and much prefer knitting patterns that are top down including sleeves in the pattern.
Lifelong knitter

This has never been a problem for me. I’m a life long “proper” (never heard that term before) knitter and my tension is fine and consistent. Its funny that this modern wisdom is something that the centuries of knitters who preceded us never knew and yet seemed to do well with their straight needles.

Love that you are becoming a knitter! Knitting has brought so many relaxing hours to my life. I’ve knitted since I was 15 and now I’m retired. Love it and the joy it brings to me and others with all the gifts I’ve been able to create for them. Warning: Yarn collecting is addictive! I now shop from my own personal yarn shop at home (gulp) Have fun!

hello Julie I have been a knitter for many years , my Mom would teach me and help me as She herself, would knit mini dresses for my favorite doll , so it’s a cherished past time for me also because it brings back such warm and loving memories of my Mom, one thing I find important is please try to support your local yarn store as much as possible by buying from them instead of online , often they will gladly order for you if you need something they don’t have , they can be a wonderful source of ideas and help and I think the quality of the yarn is very important also from an environmental friendly point of view please try to avoid synthetic fibers , I find them unpleasant to the touch anyway but many are not bio degradable and use chemical dyes etc they will also harm small animals , birds ans other critters who may find discarded pieces and seek them out for their nests…, thank you .I m glag I found you I love to make all kind of things I just purchased a sewing machine anx I m excited to learn more about sewing
