Adventures in Arting Podcast: In a Learning Phase

from the Balzer Designs Blog: Adventures in Arting Podcast

I am taking classes like a crazy person!  Well, like a person who really wants to learn stuff.  A lot of stuff.

If you do not see the podcast player above, please click on this link.  You can listen to a podcast anywhere and at any time.  It is a recording that is available to you whenever you'd like to listen.  If you'd like to download it to your iTunes library, click here.  You can also pause and rewind or fast forward as you desire.  I like to listen to podcasts while I'm making art.  It's a little like hanging out with friends while you art.  Please subscribe to our podcast in iTunes or wherever you listen and be sure to leave us a review!  Thanks so much!

As mentioned on the podcast, I've learned about Paper Piecing:

PaperPiecing
Thread Painting:

BeforeAfter-wm
And most recently, about printing on fabric with dye in "Glorious Prints" (blog posts about it coming next week – sneak peek in this week's vlog):

FabricPile-wm
As usual, the conversation meanders into much more beyond just taking classes.  I hope you'll give the podcast a listen and then tell us your thoughts on the topic!

Thanks for stopping by!

  • For a paper piecing technique you might like, watch The Quilt Show # 2210. “Ricky starts off the show with a fun and easy technique for drafting a multi-pieced patchwork goldfish block. The design elements become more interesting as he expands the number of paper-pieced units within the block design itself.” It is not as restricted as alot I have tried.

  • Julie,
You hit the nail on the head every time. You are one of the people that I take classes from because of the WAY you teach. Time management is so important. I hate taking a class, not using the supplies I bought because we ran out of time to do the technique I bought supplies for. That happens more often than not. Decision making is difficult. One thing I learned from you was to make a decision fairly quickly, and just MAKE. Some will be good, some bad. So what, do it again. Lol
In classes I may not come home with the best work, but I learned how to DO what I went to learn. Do it better at home. Learn it in class.
I have most all of your online classes. You are right. Most of them, I have watched. Some of them I have done. BUT I have them and when I’m ready to learn something new, I can do it. I don’t feel like I have to do it right away. Sometimes, I find that the technique I took the class for, wasn’t for me at the time. However, months or years down the road, I go back and look at say NOW I’m ready for that!
I love your way of thinking, learning and imparting information. Don’t change your philosophies on teaching and the way you want to learn. Thank you for incorporating that into your classes. It’s the way I love to learn.
BTW, your mom is a wise woman. This , in my opinion, was your best podcast ever!

  • Hi Julie,
I have listened to this podcast a few times and something I thought I would mention is that when doing a class I think people do need some time to work on their projects in class, so that as they work they encounter the problems they would if they were to work on the project at home but now have the teacher to help them through the problem. I think sometimes you can’t know what problems you will have until you are actually doing the project. Having said that, I think it is incredibly insightful of you both to understand that everyone has a different situation so they need different things from a class.
As you said, you as a student have learnt to make decisions fast & have a studio & at the time of this podcast you did not have your adorable little baby boy yet, so you could work when you pleased on your project, while for some it was the only time they may have.
Besides being insightful I would like to praise your incredible honesty about yourself, such as not necessarily doing the homework for an online class because not going to a class makes people less accountable. It is so true. It is also why many people do not finish their projects at home if they did not get time in class. have a suggestion for you that I hope may be helpful. helpful. Because of the many different needs of students perhaps you could offer 2 types of classes, one being a finish the project in class type & the other being an information on technique class for students to practice at home.

I assume there is a time limit for internet safety, but it means I often do not get to comment.
