Quilting Class with Katie Pasquini Masopust

Last week I was lucky enough to take a two-day quilting class with art quilter Katie Pasquini Masopust. I think that Katie is known for teaching abstraction in quilt design.  The class I took was called Artful Log Cabins and it's based on (on perhaps the book is based on the class) Katie's newest book, Artful Log Cabin Quilts:

Having taken the class and copious notes, I felt I'd rather buy a book of hers on a topic that might be less familiar, so I purchased her book, Design Explorations for the Creative Quilter:

I haven't really cracked it open yet, but a brief perusal seems to indicate that there is plenty of room to use her design ideas in painting and collage — not just quilting.

On the first day of class, Katie shared some of her log cabin quilts:

Then, it was time for us to create grid patterns for our own quilts, based on an inspiration photo.  This is mine:

Katie took our patterns to a copy shop to blow up to ginormous (or actual quilt size) and we began to sew:

This was my workspace:

For those who don't quilt, "a log cabin" is a fairly well known traditional quilt block:

On day two of class, Katie showed us some log cabin alternatives:

And we continued to sew, sew, sew!  You can see how big my pattern is in the photo below:

Everyone in class had a lot of area to cover in a fairly short period of time.

I didn't manage to finish my quilt top, but I got a pretty good start:

I'm hoping to finish this quilt at some point.  I just need to find (a) the time and (b) the space to have this pattern out.  But, you know what they say: where there's a will, there's a way!  I'm looking forward to seeing where these techniques and ideas take me!

Thanks for stopping by!
