If you're new to Art Journal Every Day, there is a short introduction here. All of the previous posts can be found archived here. Remember, it's just ten minutes of nourishing your creative self every day! No need to finish anything or even like it. If you've done some art journaling this week, use the hashtag #artjournaleveryday so that we can all take a peek. Even if you're not on social media, you can see everything (from twitter, pinterest, instagram, and facebook) that uses that hashtag here.
The italicized text above appears in every single Art Journal Every Day post. Do you read it? Or do you simply glance over it?
If you read it, you'll see that I encourage people to post to instagram using the hashtag #artjournaleveryday. There are so many inspiring art journal pages under that tag. The thing I like best about visiting that tag is that it reminds me that art journaling means so many different things. There are ideas for stamping, stenciling, drawing, painting, collaging, and more. There are ideas if you like graphic, colorful, messy, clean, simple, layered, or anything else under the sun!
Today I thought I'd share 10 posts that caught my eye this week and say a few words about why I like them and how they inspire me. Let me know if you agree or disagree with me!
"aisforanika" is someone you should follow if you like art and you like experiments. She is always making interesting things and experimenting with new materials. I chose this piece because when I flipped through the images in my phone, I was immediately attracted to the hand drawn pattern and that luscious red watercolor. This piece inspires me to be less rigid about patterns. Look closely, it seems like a uniform pattern, but most of those diamond-shaped things are subtly different!
It's no secret that I love faces, so of course this collection of faces grabbed me immediately. I love how simple and yet evocative these faces are. I am charmed by the color palette and the black inky choices surrounded the faces. I definitely feel inspired to create my own version of simple faces held within portals.
I have no idea what the text says, but I love, love, LOVE the multicolored watercolor writing. I feel immediately inspired to create a spread in my own journal that is just a rainbow filled page of text!
Have I mentioned that I love pattern? Well, I do. And the best part about this pattern is that "cleoscrap" has cleverly layered a white and then (partial) blue print of my "Pointy Circles" stencil to create her own unique pattern! I'm drawn to the simple color scheme — black, blue, and white. And I'm inspired to try her off-set layered technique to expand my own printing of stenciled and stamped designs! (BTW: when I chose it, I didn't even realize it was one of my stencils. It wasn't until I started to analyze why I liked it that I realized she had used "Pointy Circles!")
I think I can safely say that flowers are a delight to paint. They're certainly one of my favorite motifs. I love the way that "innercompassdesigns" has created a field of flowers in which the large flowers are not the front most flowers. It seems like such a simple thing, but most of the time when you see flower drawings, it's the big bright flowers that are right in the front, In this painting they seem to be slightly covered by the small purple flowers. I love that. This page inspires me to put something unexpected in the foreground rather than what is expected.
Well, I've talked about how I like faces and patterns and flowers, but you all know that my first love is the eye. Oh yeah! And this page features a totally gorgeous print of my Me-Oh-My Pair of Eyes Art Foamie. But, that's not the only reason I love it. I love the stenciled pattern within the eye. I love the division of the page and the galaxy-like feeling. I feel inspired to try some stenciling and doodling inside an eye now! That's really cool!
Gorgeous simplicity. This page makes me think of the ocean and the sky. The background is so aggressive and free, which is a fantastic contrast to the stenciled text. I love how the page states what it's about, but the design also reflects what the page is about. This spread inspires me to do a better job of making sure the design of my work reinforces the message I'm trying to send.
One of my current obsessions is unfinished work. But not really unfinished. Work that is resolved but still looks unfinished. Do you know what I mean? This page feels like that to me. It's done and yet unfinished. It's resolved and yet unfinished. I really like it and I feel inspired by keep pushing against that line of unfinished/resolved.
Color! Pattern! Art Foamies! Text! Book pages! It's like a greatest hits page! "rachelgreig" is the owner of Darkroom Door Stamps. She used to be a photographer and I think she brings that photography eye to the art she creates. I love how she's balanced the weight of the text and dark paint with those bright red circles. I feel inspired by the area on the right where the circle is unfinished inside. I'm not sure if she masked it or applied the paint unevenly, but I love the way it looks and how it transforms that perfect design. It almost acts as a highlight for that book page and text. So cool!
Hand carved stamps are the best and I love how "sarahthemoodler" is using a stamp to create so much movement and energy on top of this simple background. I love that she used black ink instead of green. I feel inspired to mix a simple and clean "under layer" with an active transparent "top layer."
Are you feeling inspired? Do you see things that I don't? Or don't see things that I do? Let me know!
Thanks for stopping by!
VERY inspired…thank you….particularly like that unfinished circle…but each choice was a “learning moment” …you’re the best.

Love the picks! Yes, I do read the italic part. I have not tagged my art journaling as I am so new and wel, I have all the excuses other people have. Some cool stuff for sure. Those enormous flowers were in warm colors and the smaller ones in cooler colors. Thus an even bigger contrast. So it was a study of contrast too? And the void full of smaller flowers would be a good spot for words, journaling etc. I was really drawn to all the vibrancy.

Julie, Julie, JULIE!! You have my brain hurting with the resolved/finished thing. Ever since the Matisse podcast where I first got wind of it I am trying to work out what it is about and I DON’T KNOW!! Ack!!! I want to know more!! Can you point me to more or discuss it more fully in another podcast? (Maybe you have and I just haven’t gotten there yet.) I feel like I’m stalking this question now! Thanks for being the true superwoman that you are, you inspire me daily!!
