Art Journal Every Day: Patterns are Awesome!

ArtJournalEveryDayLogo-150If you're new to Art Journal Every Day, there is a short introduction here.  All of the previous posts can be found archived here.  There is a flickr group for sharing right here.  Remember, it's just ten minutes of nourishing your creative self every day!  No need to finish anything or even like it.  If you've done some art journaling this week and you've blogged about it, or put it on flickr, please leave a link in the linky list at the end of this post.  Thanks!

I'm in Colorado to teach four art journaling classes this weekend!  On the airplane here I watched The Lego Movie.  If you've seen it, you know that the major (and catchy) song is "Everything is Awesome." So, I couldn't help but title this post "patterns are awesome!"  (And yes, I'm singing it to the tune of "everything is awesome.")

Anyway, I'm a big fan of patterns.  It's probably one of the reasons that I love stencils so much, and why the stencils I create are usually 2-D patterns rather than objects.  Also why I love stamp carving — so many ways to create unique patterns!  The fabulous news is that patterns and art journals go together like peanut butter and jelly.  Whenever I'm stuck for something to do — whether it's a big blank page or a way to fill some space — I love to create patterns!  Stencils and stamps are a super easy and quick way to do that.  But if you want to hand paint patterns, the internet is full of great inspiration.  Here are a few patterns I found inspiring while cruising Pinterest:

Remember, pattern inspiration doesn't just come in a flat form.  Sometimes it comes from objects in our life or on the web:

Do you use patterns in your art journal?  Where do you find your pattern inspiration?

  • I often take photos of patterns, too. Some I play with in my art journal, and some I just forget about. Creating a pin board for patterns is a great idea!

  • When I travel, I collect patterns to save for later. Some of the best patterns I’ve found are in hotel carpets and wallpaper. Often very busy and colorful (to hide wear), these bold patterns make great inspiration.
