ScanNCut Tutorials: Vinyl Nail Decals, True Type Font Converter & Alignment in the Machine

Good Morning! I've got three fantastic ScanNCut videos for you today plus a project update!

First up, some vinyl nail decals for St. Patrick's Day:

from the Balzer Designs Blog: #ScanNCut Tutorials

Impress your friends and family with the tiny vinyl pieces you can make with your ScanNCut. Use built-in designs, or cut your own unique shapes to wear. Follow along as we accessorize your digits with decals.  Here's the video:

I prototyped on my own nails, which were painted.

from the Balzer Designs Blog: #ScanNCut Tutorials
When I put the vinyl on Ashlie's unpainted nails during the video shoot, we discovered that the vinyl didn't stick as well.  Therefore, I would recommend using painted nails for this process.

Next up, Brother has given you — for FREE — the font converter that you've been asking for!  YES!  You can now use all of your TTF (True Type Fonts) with your ScanNCut.  Watch the video for the how to:

And here's the cut I made in the video:

And now, here is a feature that I think makes an enormous difference.  It's alignment and it's available in your machine when you're editing files.  Watch how easy it makes creating custom files:

And here's the cut from the video:

Great results and so easy to do, right?!  If you don't see the alignment features in your machine, be sure to download the most recent ScanNCut firmware.

And finally, here is a project update!  Remember those glittery heart magnets that I posted last month?  Well, I made a few more in other colors and other shapes, just for fun (and I added some dimensional paint):

  • Hi Julie,
I watched these scan n cut videos of yours. I love each and everyone. I have not tried the nail vinyl one yet. See now another avenue for you to go on. Nail art. I was thinking about this with Ashly. Yes paint your nails first. If one does not want color put a clear base coat on then vinyl then the clear to[ coat.
I like the idea of the printable vinyl. I have been pricing it out. The magnets are something I am looking to try too. I noticed the cricut magnet sheets. Pricing that too.
I absolutely love the Font type converter. I have really been having a good time with that and dingbats. I found some really cute bunny font dingbats for Easter. Some look like the shape of chocolate bunnies.
I was watching the Q&A session you had on google. I found that video fabulous. I think you covered everything in that video about what the scan n cut can do. I really found it so informative. I learned a lot from that.
I have been working in my art journal. I have incorporated shapes from scan n cut too. Yesterday I cut out one of the Easter eggs and lots of other shapes including the seahorse you show here.
I have been using Anna Griffith card stock plus other card stock that is cheaper and cheaper made. In comparison I have to say Anna’s card cuts beautiful. The cheaper card cuts ok but not as nice or precise. I am not a fan of hers but I do like her card stock. My point is the stiffer and heavier the card stock the better the cut. At least for me.
HSN is having a craft day on the 8th of March. I am hoping you will be there. Although HSN has a lot of items for crafting. I generally watch when I know you are there.
Back to my journal. I am having fun with that and oh I also cut out a couple of the tag designs. I will mimic you as best I can and use my foam bunny stamp and make a few more stamps with my foam and stamp them on the tags. I really like that. I will then add them into my Easter page for my journal. I also sewed a leaf from the snc designs with my sewing machine.
I have a singer heavy duty and it sews 1100 stitches per minute. I did the veins for the leaf with black thread on green paper and used green in the bobbin. I used indoor out door thread so it is a heavier thread then just the standard cotton. I do not think I can use bakers twine as I do not have a machine needle with a big enough eye in it but I have not tried it yet.
I am very interested in the cm650w. With that said I could have gotten it for a really good price in January. I passed as I needed new eyeglasses. Then I think what would I do with two machines. I like my cm550 but I really do like the cm650 too. I especially like the new stencil designs and the new fonts etc.
When I go into my account for canvas and see all the kits that I have bought. I see the foil and the advance trace? new design collection kit. I do not know when these things are coming to us. I am looking forward to the design collection kits as I am hoping it will be some of the new designs found in the cm650w.
I am sorry I have a lot to say. I am just so excited by the scan n cut that I just brag about it as much as I can. I am grateful to have found you as you excite me with all the different ideas you come up with to use this machine and your teaching expertise.
    Happy Thursday,

  • Me again. I just wanted to add in the leaf you used pictured magnet and dimensional paint. The one to my right as looking at the picture of all the design items. That is the leaf I used and sewed the veins in where you used the dimensional paint.
I too have cut glitter paper with my scan n cut and again I found Anna’s glitter paper cut very well and no glitter coming off on the mat or into the machine.
I think your magnets are perfect and beautiful. I like what you did vice sewing the veins in. I like the dimensional paint.
