Adventures in Arting Podcast: William Merritt Chase & the Creative Process

from the Balzer Designs Blog: Adventures in Arting Podcast

I'm delighted to bring you another episode of the Adventures in Arting Podcast!

If you do not see the podcast player above, please click on this link.  You can listen to a podcast anywhere and at any time.  It is a recording that is available to you whenever you'd like to listen.  If you'd like to download it to your iTunes library, click here.  You can also pause and rewind or fast forward as you desire.  I like to listen to podcasts while I'm making art.  It's a little like hanging out with friends while you art.

I start today's podcast by saying there's a lot to say and absolutely nothing.  Both are true. I'm actually very excited by the formalization of the creative process that we discuss on the podcast.

  • Great podcast, as usual. A stitching friend of mine was complaining that she never does anything original. Her stitching is perfect, but she is afraid to design her own things. I wish I could get her to listen to this and see why she needs to experiment and play…It leads to creativity.

  • I enjoyed the podcast today. When your mom was talking about liking earrings that don’t match but go together it reminded me of the earrings done by Daryl Storrs in VT. She does miniature lithographs that at first glance look alike, yet if you look closely there are difference. Will you also be on HSN when you are down in FL? When are you coming back to NYC?

  • Love to walk and listen to your podcasts, also have gone back and am starting to work my way through the first 50. And I agree, a podcast can run and play anytime while doing things in the home, too. (No Arting guilt, here.) There should be an Adventures in Arting Sirius XM channel! #dreambig #artingpodcast

  • I’ll do your research for you! Love the research.
Re: Photos in museums, you are pretty much dead on. The main reason for not allowing pics of given pieces is that the museum doesn’t own the piece and/or doesn’t own the rights to reproduction. Here’s a pretty good overview: http://www.artnews.com/2013/05/13/photography-in-art-museums/
Flash photos are pretty much a no-go everywhere, as the light can damage the artwork.
The other reasons that I’ve heard (and I always ask at museums about photos) are 1) that the museum wants to make a little profit — which is to say, THEY took some lovely photos of their collection, which you may purchase in their gift shop. And 2) that it may be a security issue (e.g. with the crown jewels).
