The Adventures in Arting Podcast: Attitude (Episode #51)

from the Balzer Designs Blog: Adventures in Arting Podcast

I'm delighted to bring you another episode of the Adventures in Arting Podcast!

If you do not see the podcast player above, please click on this link.  You can listen to a podcast anywhere and at any time.  It is a recording that is available to you whenever you'd like to listen.  If you'd like to download it to your iTunes library, click here.  You can also pause and rewind or fast forward as you desire.  I like to listen to podcasts while I'm making art.  It's a little like hanging out with friends while you art.

Today's episode covers a lot of ground.  I titled it "Attitude" because I was trying to think how to capture all the disparate strands of our conversation and in the end I decided that they all boiled down to attitude.  Much like yesterday's blog post – which we discuss on today's podcast and I share some reader comments — attitude is one of the determining factors to contentment with what you create and even who you are.

Here are two links to things we discussed:

Mary Delany — I am planning to do a full blog post about her, but here's one photo of her work in the meantime:

My new "just for fun" instagram account: whatjulieate:

There have been some really fantastic listener comments lately, so next podcast (two weeks from now) we are going to do a show based on all of those awesome ideas and questions!  If you want to add your thoughts, we'd love to include them in our conversation, so leave us a comment!

Thanks for stopping by!

  • What a timely post. I am leaving for London England in a couple of days and have an appointment in the archives at the British Museum to view the works of Mary Delaney!

  • I’m trying to encourage my daughter to still occasionally play around with drawing or painting, etc. She’s 12 and thinks she stinks at art. I told her your story of how you used to think that and now you’re a professional artist. I showed her your blog and your art. The other night I got her to hang out and do some doodling with me. Art is too fun to give up on!

  • Again thank you for your encouraging words. I love listening to
you and your mother chat about your blog, your art and your views.
My daughter and I are very close, she is busy creating with WORDS
when she isn’t teaching Spanish to high school students. I am an
an art journaler and mixed media person (still trying to believe
I am an artist). I believe my daughter and I will use “The
Brick of Hate” now in our lives…..we need it often. THANKS

  • You had this retired librarian at the get-go by talking about your local library. And I’m so looking forward to your Mary Delany post, because I discovered her when looking for collage books at my public library and found Molly Peacock’s biography, The Paper Garden: Mrs. Delany Begins Her Life’s Work at 72. Found a lot of inspiration there as I try to get artsy in my retirement. Whenever I have a question about a technique or supply, I think “What does Julie say?” and head right for the search box on your blog!

  • It was GREAT listening to both of you while playing with colors and stuff, learning to relax and love what I’m doing. You’ve even made me love and cry.
Thanks a lot for all you are doing. I love your art and the way you are doing your inspiring work. It is a pity I’m living so far away but still I can learn so much from you by the internet.

  • Affirmation is the beginning of the road to success, and I’ll bet your Mom has been your driving force all along. Of course she doesn’t want you to grow up- as you continue to do- and maybe you should look at the sibling lineup as One has Won and “Too” is Also, for more laughs! You always want us to think of the possibilies, and that is so evident not only in the way you teach, by asking questions of us, but how you share your museum and other experiences, too. It’s great technique of a different kind. That’s why I keep coming back for more, ‘Oh Captain, My Captain.’ I respect your body of work.
