Inspired by Retail Displays

During a recent visit to New York City I was struck by how artful so many of the retail displays were.  I came away with tons of inspiration:

  • inspiring color combinations — and maybe some inspiration to use colors I stay away from, like brown.
  • inspiring pattern ideas — I love the patterns on the pillows towards the end of the post.
  • inspiring display/photography ideas — natural elements like plants, wood, and stone all really help to bring out the "pretty."
  • inspiring shapes — love that sort of wooden figure eight behind the overalls.
  • inspiring icons — eyes, feathers, elephants, cats, bugs…so many cool things to draw!
  • inspiring project ideas — I particularly love the glass feathers, the wire word, and the beaded lampshades.
  • inspiring materials to try out — using used brushes as art objects or how about all that wood?!

My head was just swimming with ideas and so I wanted to share my photos and see if they sparked a similar reaction in you!

  • It’s all lovely. I wouldn’t know how to pick just one, but it reminds me of a thing you did on finding patterns in public places. Ever since I read that post (years ago) I notice patterns in masonry and fabrics and think about how I can use them in my zentangling.

  • I think the main thing I got from this was to get out more. We have moved back to the country, and I love staying at home working in the garden. I run to the local grocery and get what I need and run back home. But, I must admit my painting creativity is just not there. Those pictures were great–my favorites the boxes and the wooden eight wallhanging.

  • I love Anthropologie so much! I always feel like I’ve gone to a museum after a visit there and I too take a lot of photos. I love those boxes the best. My sister just got a new kitchen and I scavenged all the old drawers and cabinet doors, with something similar in mind. I am going to build a unit of some kind, to display succulents in.
My hubby and I are preparing for retirement and have bought a home in another state where we will move. Our place is looking like an Anthropologie store, and we love it. The relatives just shake their heads at what they call our strangeness. Every time I am here, I buy a new plate from Anthro, so I am going to run down there today and see if they have the eye one..and the bug, bird, butterfly..lovely!

  • Love the wire “beauty” with the beautiful texture behind. I would definitely have chosen the Anthro stuff if I hadn’t already seen other pics of their current displays.
Like Barbara (above) I’m considered the strange one in our family because of the things I choose for subjects in my photos.

  • I have always tried to decorate with the “old” or “forgotten” in my home, and not just in my craft room, it’s such a comforting feeling to be surrounded by things from the past that have personal meaning.
The first thing I think of (working retail) that this was a smartly budgeted display, lol. I so love the paintbrushes. Baseball bats for a baseball theme.. maybe the small, collectible ones. And I’ve seen some cool, wine glass chandeliers.
The very next thought I had… What Would Julie Do? It would be a dream to design a window or a storefront in NYC!

  • Pretty much nothing I don’t love in your photos! Standing out: The paintbrush display — not necessarily “oh wow, used paintbrushes!” but it inspires the idea of abundance. I love ridiculous amounts of anything displayed all together. I have a lot of “collections” of various different things, so this makes me think, “How could I turn those into something decorative and beautiful and show off all that abundance?” I love the card with the little hearts, that seems like, wow, easy, something I could actually do that would add a cool tactile element that also has movement, to my journal pages. I love the blankets and pillows with the bright patterns– i have a purse made with similar fabric and i LOVE it! (a bag would be awesome to make out of your mola, Julie!) I have an antique bottle collection, so I’m loving that colorful display of tiny dishes, bottles, and plates–all those different shapes and colors! Love the elephants, the clay animals and people, the EYE PLATE!, and the box display. ooooh, I would love to do a display of real feathers like the paintbrush display, that would sway with any swoosh of air! ok, I am inspired, can you tell?

I love the blankets and pillows with the bright patterns– i have a purse made with similar fabric and i LOVE it! (a bag would be awesome to make out of your mola, Julie!) I have an antique bottle collection, so I’m loving that colorful display of tiny dishes, bottles, and plates–all those different shapes and colors! Love the elephants, the clay animals and people, the EYE PLATE!, and the box display. ooooh, I would love to do a display of real feathers like the paintbrush display, that would sway with any swoosh of air! ok, I am inspired, can you tell?

  • Color! I love the browns, but the stuff that was stitched reminded me of my Hispanic heritage. Love it. Want to go play with my threads.
