Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum

Let's go to the museum, you guys!  For this visit, my Dad and I spent a few hours at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston.  It's Isabella Stewart Gardner's grand home and all the art she collected during her lifetime is hanging or standing where she left it.

The house is built around a wonderful sun-filled courtyard.

The house is currently under repair, so only certain parts were open to us when we went.

In the modern addition to the museum (which hosts a library, lecture hall, restaurant, and exhibit space), they are currently showing the artwork which normally hangs in the part of the home that is currently being renovated.  You can see from the photos above that the house is fairly dark and you can't get that close to much of the artwork.  Therefore, this opportunity to see the paintings up close and personal couldn't be missed!

We had a delicious lunch in the restaurant.  I thought the presentation of the food was quite artful — not to mention, tasty!

Yum!  The last time I was at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum was before the infamous painting heist back in 1990.  It was nice to go back.  I'm not going to let as much time pass before my next visit!

Thanks for stopping by!

  • Lucky you! I read about the Museum in a fiction book that featured it and the theft. I am drawing a blank on the title. It’s been on my bucket list since I read it.

  • I went to college next door back in the late 70’s early 80’s. Didn’t get to go in alot because of the price and being a student. Loved it there. I wish to go again, and just sit and read. Where are you from?

  • I was fortunate to spend a couple days in Boston last weekend. The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum’s Third Thursday event was my first art stop! I loved the courtyard (no blue flowers), especially the columns. Unfortunately it was crowded and very noisy, so I made an early exit, but not before marveling that there were any artifacts left in Europe after Mrs. Gardner shopped there. She was quite a collector. I had been there as a child and didn’t remember much more than being awed by the grandeur.
Your posts about the Asian Cities exhibit at the MFA made it a must for a visit, and I thoroughly enjoyed my time there. There were some thought-provoking installations, and some that were fun. Loved the little green army men in their battle positions in the green items exhibit. The techno fashion items were amazing. Thank you for taking us there when we can’t make the museums and displays in person!
