The Art of the Brick: DC Comics (Powerhouse Museum)

While in Sydney I went to see a unique art exhibit — dozens of figures and scenes made up entirely of LEGOs.  It is called "The Art of the Brick: DC Comics."  I wasn't sure what to expect.  I'm not much more than a casual comic book fan and I haven't made anything with LEGOs in years.  But I was quite impressed — both with the figures, and the curation of the exhibit.  My favorite part was all the wall signs.  I thought they were quite thoughtful — and certainly made me think a little deeper about why superheroes resonate so strongly with so many people.  I hope you enjoy taking a peek:

I was particularly drawn to this last series of quotes — the character cubed quotes.  I thought it was an incredibly clever way for the artist to demonstrate how/why certain characters resonate.  By using well known quotes it further emphasizes how superhero lore taps into our cultural zeitgeist.

What are your thoughts after taking a look at the exhibit?

Thanks for stopping by!

  • Love it! When we went to Legoland in FLA a few years ago I spent two days just looking at the details of the countries that were built with Legos. Such attention to detail makes me notice objects more when they are made out of blocks the same shape.

  • I would love to see this exhibit of Nathan’s. I managed to catch the one in Philadephia last year by complete surprise. His works of art just boggles the mind – well at least it did mine.

  • There is currently an exhibit called The Art of the Brick that is touring the US. I just saw it in Cincinnati and it was fabulous! This particular show focuses on recreating famous works of art out of Legos. Truly remarkable the skill it takes to translate a flat painting using a 3 dimensional medium.
