I loved everything about Melbourne.  The vibe felt great and the street art meant that every building made you feel happy.  I look forward to going back to Melbourne some day in the future!

  • What creativity and what beauty. I too thought the man with the tree was amazing. I also like the lips and tongue 3D affect. I also loved the painting of the the women with the scarf. She reminded me of Vivian Leigh from Gone with the Wind.
I loved it all the talent and how nice to have an area to express ones creativity.
Thank you Julie so much for sharing this with us. I know this is a place I will really never see in my life time.
It is so fantastic to get a glimpse of a place that I would like to see but in reality never will.
Thank you so much again. Will be waiting for the next round of pictures. Awesome.

  • as a happy Melbournian living here in the outskirts, in the beautiful surrounding bush land of Montrose, I hope people do not think this lovely city is in your face art everywhere. There are a lot of delightful small lanes in the inner city where art is displayed, other areas are older with graceful buildings , and a large areas with green parks.
However, I love the art, but also love some of the serenity, enjoy our city and surroundings, all welcome

  • Julie – thank you for sharing these photos! I have taken pictures of street art in Sydney, and other places I’ve been blessed to visit – like Finland. Being in my 60’s I often get peculiar looks as I take the photos – guess I’m not part of the usual appreciative demographic 🙂
It would be nice to have more areas in the US that welcome street art. There are some amazingly talented people who should not have to risk run-in’s with the law in order to display their work.

  • While the street art or graffiti is amazing, is it in the more seedy parts of town? Why was it allowed to get out of hand? Those immense paintings didn’t happen secretly. I am curious about this. Marijke Owen continue your comments.

  • From what I can tell, most of the locations pictured are alleyways in the central business district or the innermost suburbs (Carlton). So no, not particularly seedy areas.
Street art is allowed if you have permission of the owner of the building you’re doing it on, I think council permission may be required in some areas as well but I’m not 100% sure.
The Melbourne council has specific policy differentiating between street art and tagging, other suburban councils vary. On the other hand, carrying spraycans near public transport will get them confiscated by police & they will get involved to see what’s going on if they see you.
