Hey you guys!  Today I want to share a super easy printing technique known as a "rainbow roll."  Essentially you combine two colors of block printing ink to create a tri-colored print like these ones:

Watch the video for the how-to (there's an extra tip or two at the end of the video):

Block printing ink has a much longer open time than acrylic paint, so it's perfect for this technique.  It also tends to be a bit more opaque and so looks great printed on top of book pages!

Thanks for stopping by!

  • if you were only going to do one or two prints, could you use a heavy body acrylic? I can understand if you were going to do several needing the block printing ink, but what about for just one single or two prints for an art journal? I would think taht would work?

  • Thanks for showing this technique. I was just browsing the Blick website last week and saw the inking palettes and was thinking of ordering them. Now I really will get them! Can you tell me where you got the metallic paint or did you mix a medium in to get the metallic colors? Didn’t see metallic paint on the Blick site.

  • Terrific video! Fab carved stamp. Thanks for showing this easy, awesome technique. I like stamping on print or printed papers, too. 🙂 Cool mono-prints to use up the leftover ink, too.

  • I don’t use acrylic paint with my hand carved stamps because I have had bad experiences with ruining them that way. But the technique will work. You just have to clean your stamp fast enough.

  • So glad you re-shared this – I missed it the first time. Just curious, could you use slo-dri blending gel to extend the open time of acrylics rather than the block printing ink? Thanks!
