My friend Jenn and I took a two-hour clay bowl class at the Arsenal Center for the Arts. I've played around with paper clay and with polymer clay, but I had never taken a "real" pottery class. It was awesome and it made me want to do more!
We hand shaped our bowls, using paper bowls as basic molds.
As you can see, the clay is grey when you work with it. However, once it's fired it turns white. I was surprised that we were able to paint the bowls with color almost immediately after making them. We did use a hair dryer to speed up the clay drying, but it was shockingly fast. I managed to make three bowls in the two-hour class! (I did have to come back a few weeks later to pick them up after they were fired in the kiln.)

I'm absolutely thrilled to have beautiful bowls that I made to use in my home!
While I was making them, I couldn't help but think how totally amazing stencils would be with clay. Need to find a way to play with some more clay…!

There might be a firing service somewhere in your area. Of course, you would have to invest in the clay and glazes yourself–unless you can find a studio that you can go to for a fee. Ask where you took the class–someone there may know where you can go.
