Ready for a tour of my really messy, really functional, really real studio? Let's do it!
These jewelry racks are awesome! I love them. They're from a place called Ginny's Ear Nests, which I'm super sad to say appears to have gone out of business. However, they're liquidating their stock and it looks like you can purchase pieces at a steep discount on ebay!
This is my main work area — two folding tables in a divided "L" configuration.
My studio is filled with drawers. I 100% believe that they're the only way for me to stay organized. I can put my hands on anything I want in under 30 seconds because each drawer has specific content. It's a system that's easy to use because putting stuff away is easy! (I think that's the key to any organizational system. The putting away has to be easy or you'll never maintain the system.)
I like bins too.
All around the room I've tried to group similar objects.
This is my pathetic Project Life station.
As you can guess from the mess, I haven't been keeping up very well lately. It's on my "to do" list….
Actually, there's a lot on my "to do" list. I'm excited about the move, but the logistics of moving are kind of overwhelming. My Mom found an article that says moving makes people as unhappy as death and divorce. Hmmmmm…I really hope that's not true!
At the end of the month when I'll be losing internet access (and possibly my mind) I have a bunch of wonderful artsy friends who have agreed to step in with some guest posts. So you won't miss a moment of artspiration during the transition!

Much as I enjoy publications like Studio and Where Women Create, I’d much rather see a real working space, such as yours. I’ve made several long moves over the years and in my teaching elementary school years, did the classroom pack up every year. Label, label, label! It would be worth the time to set up on your computer to print labels on Avery type sticky labels…large size to describe contents of each box and which room it goes in. That way you can open a box and know right where it’s content goes. Even if you have a mover pack, provide them with the labels….laid out on top of each bunch of stuff to be put on the outside of the box…in addition to any labeling they do. Take big breathing breaks often! Love yourself….we love you, too!

How fun to see others’ workspaces. Ya’ know, Julie, it depends why you are moving…when I movrd away from the house my husband built for me…pretty much by himself…and it was after he had suddenly died–it was a hard move. Death? Yes. Divorce? I can only assume. Depressed? OMG!
This last time I moved it was to be closer to one of my daughters and three of my grandsons–piece of cake! Moving was physically challenging but emotionally happy. Just a quick moving tip, I use address label paper to make labels for each box Ie: Kitchen along with a little picture of a kitchen. I also make a companion sign, 8.5 X 11 to go on the door of that room. That way the mover knows where everything goes without asking you and your art supplies don’t end up in the kitchen! Happy packing!!

I used a similar trick — colored sticky dots! Red dots on bedroom #1 boxes, same dot on that bedroom door. The visual trick made it easy, especially for my multi-lingual helpers… and every one of us when we got exhausted!

I believe that moving is as stressful as death or divorce, not necessarily as unhappy. It’s just a huge change, the same as getting married or having a child are – which I think are also up there on the stress scale.
btw I think you’re right about the secret to staying organized – it’s all in the putting away. People like to make things neat and easy to get to, but it’s making sure that you can put it all away at a moment’s notice or as you go, and that putting away isn’t a fussy, annoying task, because the clean up is already less fun than the getting out/set up. Your space isn’t showroom neat but it sure seems to be organized and works for you. I’m constantly amazed at your productivity!
