The other night I decided to gather my most hated shape of garbage rubber:

from the Balzer Designs Blog: Long Skinny Garbage Stamps #stampcarving

I know it's hard to tell scale from this photo, but these are tiny skinny bits.  They're not large enough to really cut into shapes other than the long skinny rectangles they are.  I stared at them for a while and thought very seriously about just throwing them away.  Who would ever know?

But then, I decided that I was up for the challenge and I got out my glass mat and started carving.

Necessity really is the mother of invention.  I don't love all of these, but there are a few that I think are super fantastic and I'm glad I stumbled into the designs.  Here are some close-ups (believe it or not, these close-up photos are larger than the actual tags and stamps!):

  • These came out really awesome! I love all of them but I think my favorite is the connected circles with the little star centers. You totally inspired me to break out my rubber carving tools to give it a try!

  • I love 2 and 7! And I have to tell you. You have gotten me so hooked on carving stamps! It’s become an addiction that I’m happy to have. I’ve taken the really small 1/4″ and 1/2″ bits and glued them in random fashion to an old credit card and it makes a great design pattern. So don’t throw any of those bits a way. A bunch of the little itty bitty carving scraps (the one’s like strings) balled up and dropped into a puddle of glue and left to dry make a great texture tool for the Gelli plate as well!
So thanks for teaching us how to carve!

Have you had the opportunity to do any more embroidery on that fabulous face you showed some time ago? I am sure I am not the only one who would love to see her again. Even if you have only added a few stitches, she is worth looking at again!

The reason I say that is because I struggle with hanging onto leftover bits. Thanks for sharing. Jeanine aka Teacher’s Pet

I’ve noticed that some of your carved stamps don’t have big white spaces, like your triangle/pennant. There’s solid and rough lined, not solid and white. Very interesting.

  • I really like the arrow, the hearts, and the triangle/pennant stamps. The marks along the arrow remind me of a fish skeleton. I’ve noticed that some of your carved stamps don’t have big white spaces, like your triangle/pennant. There’s solid and rough lined, not solid and white. Very interesting.

  • While I think I could make use of all of the designs I really like the heart design. You’re a better woman than I, I throw away the skinny scraps (paper, ribbon, etc.)
    Thanks for sharing

  • I am looking at the colored sample you provided also. The one with “windows” is my favorite. This could be used in so many ways . In drawing I could design my House then stamp those time consuming windows. Another plus is in multiple row house art the windows would end up with a neat little uniform look.
    I want that stamp.

  • All the stamps are great but the two I like the best are the sixth one down and the last one. The sixth one reminds me of a ships wheel. Very cool! My favorite one is the last one. At first when I looked at it I thought “oh this is too messy”. Then as I looked at it longer I saw the little hearts and the more I looked at it the more I liked it. Great job Julie!!!

  • I love #2 and #7 from the top. You always amaze me with your stamp carving. They are all fantastic, and I especially love the frugality and the “no waste” philosophy. When is your next stamp book coming out?
