I recently took a 4-week course at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) about Cubism.  My friend Nathalie talked me into taking the class.  I'm not a huge fan of Cubism.  In fact, that's something of an understatement.  I have always actively disliked Cubism.  However, Nathalie and I have taken classes with this particular teacher before and she promised me that it would be fun.

And, it was.

Classes were divided into three parts:

  1. Lecture with slides.
  2. Visit to the gallery (the best part).
  3. Studio time.

Being in the museum without the crowds is a simply marvelous experience.  You can really examine the art without getting jostled around.  And because we were with a teacher we were allowed to get super duper close to the art, which was lovely.  Our teacher, Corey D'Augustine, is an art historian and paintings conservator, so he is fantastically knowledgeable and had a lot to share.  Plus I had the opportunity to intimately examine a whole swath of legendary paintings.

I'm sharing a whole bunch of photos from the galleries with you.  I've tried to include close-ups where I can because, as you know, paintings are so different when you get close to them.

Over the course of the class I worked on some sketches and then an oil painting in a (semi) Cubist style.

Eh, not really my thing.  But it was interesting to do.

Here is some of the Cubist-inspired artwork the other students created:

Super cool, right?

All in all, I'm really glad that I took the class.  I still don't like Cubism, but I appreciate and understand it now.  And that's a win in my opinion.

Are you a fan of Cubism?

Thanks for stopping by!

  • How wonderful to be able to take a class at MOMA even if it wasn’t a class that was top on your list. A great experience I’m sure.

  • Would I buy a painting representing cubism and hang it on my wall…no? BUT when I see paintings like the ones you posted above I’m fascinated by them and can’t keep from starring at them. I love shapes with angles so maybe I stare at them because of the pointy shapes. Thanks for sharing your wonderful gallery tour.

  • I love that you can take a class! If I ever get to the U.S. I would love to visit MoMa. I can’t believe they let you take photos, here in Australua you can’t do that at any gallery.

  • Can’t you just picture Picasso and Braque sitting in a cafe, knocking back an adult beverage, sketching on napkins and inventing Cubism? And the results in their paintings are so different! It is also interesting to see the results of their invention when other artists do it. Thanks so much for sharing, Julie!

  • Not a huge fan of cubism. The more colorful ones by student were okay, but it doesn’t get my artsy mojo going. Though being able to walk around at your leisure and really close to the paintings does have its perks! Thanks for sharing.

  • I don’t respond to Cubism because, for me, it lacks emotion. After studying Cubism a bit I learned that it was a purely intellectual exercise for Braque and Picasso. I don’t respond to that in art. I want emotion and story.
