Art Journal Every Day: Fabric Scrap Cover

ArtJournalEveryDayLogo-150If you're new to Art Journal Every Day, there is a short introduction here.  All of the previous posts can be found archived here.  There is a flickr group for sharing right here.  Remember, it's just ten minutes of nourishing your creative self every day!  No need to finish anything or even like it.  If you've done some art journaling this week and you've blogged about it, or put it on flickr, please leave a link in the linky list at the end of this post.  Thanks!

Oftentimes when you submit a project for publication in a magazine you need to send step-outs.  Step-outs are the "steps" of the project in physical form.  When I create a tutorial for this blog, I simply snap photos along the way.  However a magazine wants to take their own photos and so you need to send a physical piece for each step of the process.  When I got my apron back from the Cloth Paper Scissors cover shoot, I also got my step-outs back.

Art Journal Every Day with Balzer Designs -- Making a New Junque Journal with a Fabric Cover

They were far too pretty to throw away, but too small to make a new apron.  So, I decided to stitch them together to create a fabulous fabric art journal cover!

Here it is all stitched together:

I did have to add a bit of extra fabric on the left side to make it large enough.  And I covered up some of the raw canvas on the one scrap that had a lot of it showing.

Some close-ups:

After creating the cover, I put together the insides.  I ended up adding a few screen prints to pull the cover together to make it look a bit more united.

  • It’s not a blank journal. It’s a journal I stitched together myself — same technique as from my online Junque Journal class. You can make one yourself.
