Art Tip: Sand Your Chipped Bone Folder

Several months ago I posted a tutorial video for creating an Explosion Card.  In that video, I mentioned that I had broken the tip of my bone folder and asked you to ignore how it looked.  Nan Robkin left the following comment on that post:

BTW, if that folder is really bone, you can reshape the tip with sandpaper. Just sayin'!

Oh.  My.  God.

What a stroke of genius!  I quickly got out my sandpaper and gave it a try.  And you know what?!  It worked beautifully.  Unfortunately, I neglected to take a "before" photo, but I did pull a still shot from the video where I mentioned it was broken.

Here's the before:

BrokenTip

You can see the jagged and broken tip.

And here it is all smoothed out:

Now my bone folder is back-in-business and ready for use.  I love that I don't need to buy a new one because I was able to rescue the old one.  Isn't that awesome?!

Thanks for the fantabulous art tip, Nan!  I'm delighted to pass it on!

Thanks for stopping by!

  • Great idea, Julie! It’s awesome to be able to fix up something that you already have instead of having to go out and buy something new!

  • If you used the soft fingernail files, they would also work with a bone folder without scratching it. Often found in the dollar stores and pound shops.
