It's super easy to create letterpress (i.e. a debossed colored image) with any of my Balzer Bits!  Watch the video for the how-to:

Here's the sample from the video:

I used the same technique to create the focal images for these cards:

The sentiment was created with one of my hand carved stamps.

To create the pattern on the house, I stamped an image onto the House Bit and sprayed it with water just before I put it through the die cut machine!

  • Thanks for the great tutorial , I am a BIG fan if your balzer bits and am excited the new ones are out. I love using the gelli plate with acrylic inks. I also use distress inks dabbing into them. I like spray inks but sometimes they get out of control! Thanks for the give away!!

  • I use my stencils with acrylic paints whether it is in my art journal or with my Gelli plate. I also use them with inks on my gelli plate. My favourite thing to do with stencils right now is to use them with pens, either as a starting place for Zentangle inspired art.( tangle within the stencil) or use them whole or partially as a tangle with other tangles around the stencils/masks.

  • Tradtional letterpress uses damp paper to impress the image but it seemed to work just as well with the dry. I wonder if using a die cut machine would work with a drypoint plate that I made a few years ago. I use stencils all the time, currently they are mostly used with spray inks or my gelli plates.

I’m guessing this would be the same with the Cricut hand crank set up?

  • I love this letterpress technique and what adorable bits! I’m all over the place with the mediums I use with my stencils but my most common would be ink – distress, dye and pigment. There are so many ways to apply!

  • Thanks for the tutorial Julie, you are always fun to watch and learn. I am still at the modeling paste stage. Sprays seem to still get away from me, plus I love the textures of the pastes that are out there and you can colour them up too.

  • I love how you inspire me to bring my “old” crafting products back for new uses. I love my little green cuttle bug even though I have a motorized version which is all chi chi and what not. Bits are a newer addition to my craft stash and I look forward to introducing them to the bug very soon.
My medium of choice for use with my stencils also seems to rotate a bit but lately I am really enjoying acrylic paint applied with a make up sponge. Although seeing a post you did using a big mambo air compressor looks super interesting…

  • I loved this tutorial. What a great way to get more use out of my stencils and die cutter machine.
I use spray inks the most with my stencils. But sometimes I use acrylics when I am using them on a bottom layer in my art journal because most of my inks are water soluble. And for a final layer I use colored molding paste through stencils.

  • Another great technique. My fav is acrylic paint, dabbed on with a cosmetic sponge. I just tape the paper and stencil to my mat and apply the paint directly. I also use a homemade gelatin or creative palette plate as well. For masks spraying works best for me. Now I can try the letterpress technique. Thanks.

I don’t have a die cutting machine to roll paper through to emboss like this. Any suggestions for how to get this look without a press or a cutting machine? My mind goes straight to my pasta machine as printing press. Crazy? Other ideas?

Re: What is the medium you use most often with stencils?
Acrylic paint with a credit card or a cosmetic sponge depending on if I want it thick and dimensional or thin, transparent and good for layering.

I can layer colors and not have a big mess like using color sprays. My second favorite way is to use gesso or molding paste with my stencils. Thanks for the chance to win.

  • This is going to sound VERY WEIRD, but I use kitty litter. I brush glue on my surface (canvas) through the stencil, then pour kitty litter onto the glue. When the glue is dry, I lift the stencil (and clean off any glue or kitty litter that may have stuck to the stencil.) Then I brush several layers of glue over the kitty litter and when it is dry I then paint with acrylic paint. It adds lovely texture to my canvas. Some people use sandbox sand, but I like the kitty litter because it gives a grittier, grainier surface which I like for my particular style of painting.

  • Recently I used a glitter gel sparkle paste through a damask Kaisercraft stencil. Often I use gelatos and other water soluble crayons to apply colour, OR to use a baby wipe to lift the design through the stencil. I love having 2 choices when I have 1 set of supplies out and I am making a few cards at once. It is fast to clean up too. I also like to use a Pitt artist pen to trace outlines of flower stencils, then colour through the stencil with gelatos or other water based crayons, with a baby wipe, my finger, or if I am using them on a palette, with a fantastix or waterbrush. When they are dry I cut them out with my Scan n Cut to use on cards.
