If you're new to Art Journal Every Day, there is a short introduction here. All of the previous posts can be found archived here. There is a flickr group for sharing right here. Remember, it's just ten minutes of nourishing your creative self every day! No need to finish anything or even like it. If you've done some art journaling this week and you've blogged about it, or put it on flickr, please leave a link in the linky list at the end of this post. Thanks!
Today I'm sharing pages from my sketchbook (i.e. my travel journal) from the beginning of 2015. I enjoy the change of pace and not always journaling in the same way. In fact, even within my sketchbook I create in many different styles!
These birds were inspired by Anika Starmer's beautiful work.
I abandoned this one in a sort of half-finished state. Some sketches are just like that.
If I were to classify this as a style, I would call it "insane doodling." And my brother would probably agree. He leaned over to me on the flight and said, "Doesn't drawing each of those little dots make you want to punch yourself in the face?" He looked surprised when I told him that I find it relaxing.
This looks kind of funny. Just turn it to the right….
Sometimes a subject calls for a vertical drawing rather than a horizontal one.
These little patterns are the reason that I decided to do #28patterns. I was reminded of how fun and easy creating patterns is!
I employed some of my favorite sparkly Sakura gel pens for this one. The glitter seemed appropriate for Vegas!
This is going to sound weird, but I was actually impressed with myself that I was able to draw the label on this bottle. I didn't think I was going to be able to, but I simply attacked it bit by bit and I love how it turned out!
So there you have it, a peek into my sketchbook. Which sketch is your favorite and why?
Here is this week's linky list:
Thanks for stopping by!

They are all wonderful so it is hard to pick one. My favorite is the bird with scrip running across it and paint spatters. It is colorful, bold and has a freedom of expression which is very appealing.

Oriental dining room because it really shows the growth that you’ve made with sketching. Wow. Plus it celebrates your dining alone. Something that I really enjoy with a good book. Does that still count as dining alone?

I love the bird and California sketches! So colorful and vibrant (and detailed!) You’ve inspired me to get back into my own personal art journaling. I did it for years and keep a little art journal for my daughter (rather than a baby book) but haven’t made time to keep one for myself. I have so many other projects I love making! 🙂 But I do love chronicling life with little sketches and doodles…it is always so nice to look back on those. Thanks so much for this site. So glad I found it! 🙂

Love the birds…….but the modern watering hole is thought provoking…….why do we “plug in” to communicate?!?!
Your journaling is inspiring……this is what I will aim for……when I am not terrified that mine won’t be as pretty or colorful, or artistic as yours!!

“Reach for the stars” is by far my favorite and I can’t figure out how you did it- was the white first>? or did you free hand the black and then fill it in? Or perhaps handwritten script loose pencil first, and then an outline with black, and THEN white? Inquiring minds want to know!!
Seriously, I love being creatively fed first thing every morning, you’re an creative inspiration to me!! Thank you.

Love the ALL, but I adore the simplicity of the sun/water drops, that is really cool. The doodling is insane … do you offer a doodling class? You should! I could look at it for hours, which is probably how long it took to make … amazed! Thanks for sharing

I love that California one best. I enjoy the densely packed pattern look. Also all the different colors you used. Its funny how the world seems to be divided into those who “get” art journaling and those like your brother who would find it tortuous 🙂

I agree with most posters; all your work is fabulous and it’s inspiring to watch how your work has evolved over the years. My favorite, however, is the California spread, first because of how your lettering just pops off that background and the gorgeous colors and almost art deco-ish shapes. Second because your brother’s comment made me laugh out loud!

The birds and California pages seem so different from what I’m used to seeing from you…but I absolutely love them! I also admire the way you can sketch and color wherever you go. I think I would be too intimidated to sketch in a public setting.

I love the first “spirit bird” with the script – love the shape and colors – I just love the image because I have had dreams several times of a similar looking bird. Reminds me of the Phoenix rising out of the ashes. A tie for favorite is the “watering hole” one – because I just love that reddish brown and the blue together and I LOVE the way you shaded and polka dotted the letters – LOVE those shades of blue!
