Hi, I'm Giovanna Zara from Italy. It’s so exciting to be here on Julie’s blog. I hope you like my project with fabric. I found a way to upcycle the old whit-ish cotton sheet to a supersmooth, flexible fabric for stencilling and stamping on. I sewed a kindle holder and a box pouch with it.
Take your old piece of cotton fabric and cover it with super heavy gesso, thoroughly. Set aside to dry at least a couple of hours, you can use the heat gun to speed drying if you like.
Once dry, lay the stencils on the fabric and start to spray with your favourite mists: I created a sort of grid with repeating patterns. I used Cosmic Mister spray ink and Julie's TCW 6 x 6 Swirly Garden, Cursive Alphabet and Herringbone.
When happy with the background add more stenciled details using a little sponge through the stencil Henna Hands with Archival inks.
Add stamped images using the Archival Inks.
Cut the fabric to size.
Glue roughly a piece of batting.
Fold the fabric up to create a pocket to hold the Kindle. Use a sewing machine to zigzag stitch the two edges shut (the gesso keeps the fabric from fraying).
Hand sew a snap to the inside and a decorative button and metallic embellishment to the outside.

I just released my first online course about ArtJournaling in Italian, because there are few people in Italy that make craft and I would like they were thousands, so spread the Art-bug is my goal.

Love this project! How do you keep the fabric from running if it gets wet and the sprays are water soluble? I have made fabric in a similar manner for a beach bag, but the material runs when wet. I tried a spray fixative from Krylon, but that did not work. Thanks.

Unfortunately I haven’t find a way to fix the watersoluble colours on fabric. If I sew stuff that goes near water I use acrylic colors spray, like the new Decoart MediaMisters, for example. Hope it helps!
