This is the final painting in my trio of Polke-inspired canvases.
This canvas came together in pieces and parts over about a month. I started it at home, worked on it in class, and then finished it at home.
I stitched two scraps of fabric together — one handpainted and the other a commercial fabric. Then I stretched the stitched fabric scraps onto canvas stretcher bars instead of plain old canvas.
The face is a Thermofax screen. I then scrawled all over the canvas with a white and a black pen.
To finish the canvas off, I added several tags, including this black and white number tag. The numbers are hand carved stamps!
I have found that – for me – projects that come together over time are always more interesting than the ones that I complete in a single sitting. Time is a factor in my creative process. I think that's part of what I love about my art journal — my pages come together in fits and starts.
How do you create? Over time or in one sitting?
Thanks for stopping by!

I have just started painting again and I am finding that I like to
take my time and think about what I’m going to do next. I also like having several projects going at once. It seems like that would be a chaotic way to create but it’s working for me!

Over time, definitely. Painting, poetry, stitching … I will happily go back to a “finished” piece and work on it again.

Definitely over time. I too need that time for reflection — and walking by it several dozen times! Just the fact that drying time will factor into many of my canvases, makes me slow down the process and allows me to work on several projects at the same time.

I also create over time. To me, it is best if I stop when I am uncertain and walk away. This can be frustrating, because you want to finish your piece, but I always know when I’ve reached the “ah ha” moment.

Julie, I love the depth, colors, and texture of this collaged piece so much! It is one of my favorites of yours, and I am a super fan, so choosing would be so very hard! 😉 I think the pieces where you incorporate fabric, especially your hand painted ones, bring so much of the absolute you into them. Maybe because I took your “It’s Sew Easy” class way back when.
As for me, I also prefer to create in small increments of time, and feel my work is definitely better when I do.

I work in bits and pieces over time. I tend to over think things in general, so just making sure I PLAY is the big thing for me right now. Doing ANYthing “artsy-craftsy” makes me happy so every little bit helps.

The best work takes several days, weeks or months. Sometimes I let go of things and then come back to them. Practically speaking, things take time to dry. And the following day always brings a fresh prospective. I like your independent spirit. I like everything you do.
