Guest Post: Using Stencils as Stitch Guides with Anne (part 1)

GuestPost copy
Hello and “Guten Tag” to everybody. I am Anne Lange from Germany and I would like to show you how I use Julie's Stencils for my embroidery.

I work with my own hand dyed fabrics and threads…

AL-Threads-3

…and use them to stitch on patterns that I made by dabbing acrylic colour through the stencils. My first choice are Golden Fluid Acrylics, especially the metallics.

German Knot Stitch
On this embroidery (above) I used copper metallic on Julie’s stencil “Woodparquet” and stitched lines of german knots (also called coral stitch) over the pattern.

Goldfish
In the PDF-File below you will find instructions on how to stitch the goldfish in the photo above.

Fly Stitch
When you take the pattern vertically, you can stitch leaves instead of fishes (work in progress).

When I asked URSULA FIRNKES, one of my students, to help me with this guest post, she made the following embroideries for us. They are 4 x 4 inches and I call them “Versa-tiles” because you can make such a lot with those tiles: sew them on quilts or bags or book covers and so much more. But first of all they are swapped between embroiderers.

In my next guest post I will show you in a film called Raised Embroidery, how I made this one:

Anne Lange 2

SuppliesUsed

In her online classes, Anne goes over supplies in detail, but in brief for those who are wondering:

  • I use all kinds of fabric, but mostly cotton. For the embroideries in this guest post I used calico.
  • I use John James Needles: Embroidery Needles, Size 3 – 9 – "E3-9" and Chenille Needles, Size 18-24 – "CH-18-24"
  • I use my own threads, i.e. "Hand dyed silks and cottons of Atelier Lange-Nadel."  I use a very wide range of different threads of all thicknesses, materials and coulors.  People can only get my threads together with my workshop, because I dye them all myself and can not do a big production. To make sure that I can well equip my students any time, I do only sell to them.
  • I bought the stencils at http://www.mijn-eigen.com, a Dutch (European) company. You could add this information, if you like, for your European readers.

Hope that helps the curious!

Anne LangeAnne Lange teaches embroidery in her studio in Germany and at shows, but mainly in online courses on her website. Anne has a german embroidery education as well as the English City & Guilds Diploma in Design & Embroidery. She loves to simplify complicated embroidery techniques, so that people can have fun with them. Anne dyes her own threads to send them out to her online students.

The online course “Long Line” has recently been translated into English, so that students outside of Germany would be especially welcome to join in. “Long line” goes for nine months and starts every year in April and in October. To see students work and get further information you are invited to go to www.lange-nadel.de

  • Wow. I have been making four inch stitched squares as a challenge to myself this month. Now you have given me inspiration to use stencils as well. Perhaps I will just have to go for another month!

  • Wow… I have never really been all that interested in embroidery before. Don’t get me wrong, a lot of it looks nice and I’d love to hang it on my wall. But this post makes me want to go grab my fabric stash and try my hand at it. They are beautiful.

  • Thanks Anne for showing me another way to use my stencils.
I just love the texture that the thread gives to the cloth.
I think that I’ll try this on cardstock.
