Before we get to today's guest post, I just want to share a peek at the project I'm teaching for the "12 Artsy Ornaments" online class:
You can read all about the class and sign-up HERE. I think it's going to be a ton of fun!
And now onto Lisa's fun watercolor and salt tutorial! As you probably know, salt interacts with wet watercolor in a wonderful way, and Lisa has a fabulous idea for mixing that technique with stencils!!
Hi everyone! I’m Lisa VanDyke and I want to give a huge Texas size Thank you to Julie for this wonderful opportunity. I’ve never done anything like this before so I’m a bit nervous, I hope that someone finds inspiration from this little technique tutorial.
I happened upon this technique when I was playing around with watercolors and wondered hmmmm what if I laid a stencil down and sprinkled salt through the stencil. I loved the results.
For this tutorial I used watercolor paper but I have used tags and cardstock before. The only difference is that I use gesso before applying watercolor to tags or cardstock.
Let’s get started! I simply applied watercolor to dry watercolor paper then laid my blazonry stencil…
…down and sprinkled sea salt, set aside – without removing the stencil – and let it dry. Once dry, I wiped off the salt and voila!
You can see the shape of the stencil in the salted areas!
On this next one I decided to play with a few different colors. Once again I swished watercolor onto dry paper, laid my stencil down, sprinkled table salt through the stencil, set aside to dry, and wiped off the salt once the paint had dried.
I forgot to take a photo of this sample when it was finished, but here's the same stencil with a different color of watercolor paint:
I tried out a couple of other stencils, including these words:
…and one using Derwent Inktense pencils instead of watercolor paint. I scribbled with the pencil across watercolor paper then with a very wet watercolor brush painted with water to blend the pencil.
I laid the stencil on the wet background and sprinkled table salt through stencil as usual.
Here’s a little layout I did with the experiments I had from playing!
Though I’ve done this technique several times I’m still delighted to see what the results will be. I hope you give it and try and that you too will be delighted with your results. Experiment with watercolor on dry paper vs. wet paper and with different types of salts.
SUPPLIES USED:
Hi! I’m Lisa VanDyke and I live in Texas with my hubby of 24 years, a teenage son, and several pets. I started out scrapbooking about 10 years ago and through a long journey – or maybe not so long – I discovered mixed media. I’ve fallen in love the messy colorful world and haven’t looked back. Recently though the encouragement of a good artsy friend I started a blog Messy at Art and I opened an etsy shop.
Thanks for the instructions Lisa. I love the results!
(No need to be nervous as you did great so I’m expecting to see ore guest posts from you.)

What a fun idea, Lisa. Mixed media gives us so much freedom, and you have used yours very well. Looking forward to seeing more of you and your work!

I love water colors and salt but I hadn’t thought about combining with stencils — thanks for a really great idea.

I think the best salt to use is Kosher Salt. Try both and see which you prefer. Lisa, thanks so much for this stencil technique and using Inktense.
