I'm packing my bags to head to New Jersey! The CREATE Mixed Media Retreat starts next Wednesday! If you're at all on the fence about coming, do it! My only regret about being a teacher at the retreat is that I don't have the time to take all the awesome classes I want to!
Of course, you should take my classes. (They're awesome.) But, there are so many cool classes taught by amazing teachers. You can stitch, solder, paint, drill, make jewelry, make art journals, make wall art, and make friends! Besides learning new art stuff, the best thing about an art retreat is the friendships you forge. Be sure to check out the CREATE website to see all the fun options!
These are the classes I'm teaching that still have some empty seats. Instead of the "official" class descriptions, I'm sharing a little bit more about each class. And instead of "official" class photos, I'm sharing some images of recent projects from this blog that use those techniques. Because everything I teach is something I do in my art every day!
Painted & Printed Papers: July 9, 9am-4pm
This class is all about getting covered in paint while making lovely papers to use in collage, scrapbooking, card making, art journaling, etc. The first half of the class includes techniques on pattern painting, stencil making, stenciling, stamp making, brayering, monoprinting, and rescuing ugly papers from the trash bin. After lunch we focus on Gelli printing — including how to create intentional layers on your Gelli Plate. If you're a person who never finishes anything in class and is tired of having half done projects, this is the class for you! You're guaranteed to leave with a huge stack of your own painted and printed papers!
Stamp Carving 101: July 10, 6pm-9pm
Stamp carving is so easy. Seriously. Students always tell me, "That was easier than I thought it would be." If you'd like to get started carving your own fabulous stamps, then join me for three hours of instruction. I'll get you comfortable with the carving tool and we'll transfer designs, mark them for cutting, discuss what makes a good stamp image, and carve up some rubber! You'll leave class with multiple stamps you carved yourself and a burning desire to carve some more!!
The Stenciled Art Journal: July 11, 9am – 4pm
I love layering stencils in my art journal! We'll be making fabulous papers using a combination of spray ink and acrylic paint. Then we'll bind those papers into a simple pamphlet-style art journal. Then it's time to start working in your brand new book! We'll go over techniques for uniting two disparate pages and have a great time making colorful art. (We will, of course, go over basic color mixing too!)
Explore Faces: July 12, 9am – 4pm
No one is going to make pretty faces in this class. We're going to make interesting faces. The last time I taught this class, so many students gushed that they had been completely intimidated walking into class and left feeling empowered and excited. Yay! That's just what class should do for you! We'll start off super easy and gradually add challenges. I'll hold your hand the whole way, if that's what you want, or let you take off running if that's more your style. Don't let those voices that say, "I can't draw," win! You can! Come learn how to create funky and fierce faces!
Authentic Stencils: July 13, 9am-noon
Cutting stencils is the easy part. Designing them is much more difficult. So come to class where I'll share all of my tips on what makes for a great stencil design! We'll be making several different types of stencils so that you can decide what works best for you! Art is never a one-size-fits-all affair! This is the final class slot of the retreat and this class is a nice calming way to end your art adventure!
