You'll recall the bumper cars from yesterday's post about The Coney Island Museum.
Several of us chose to sketch them. You can see some of the other sketchers' sketches here, here, and here.
Here is the sketch I did while at the museum:
After that we wandered towards The Wonder Wheel! It's a ferris wheel that was built in the 1920s. It differs from a traditional ferris wheel in that some of the carts are not affixed to the wheel. They slide as the wheel operates. It's kind of a crazy rush when they move and you seem to swing free into space!
The views from the Wonder Wheel are *wonder*ful!
Beneath the wheel are tables. I sat at one and sketched.
After our spell at the wheel, we spent some time walking the boardwalk.
We ended our walk at the Carousel…
…which was right next to the brand new roller coaster called "The Thunderbolt."

Urban Sketchers is a world-wide organization. You can check their website to see if there's a chapter in your area, or simply start one of your own! The NYC Urban Sketchers go on adventures every single Saturday. For our chapter, you can show up at the beginning of the day or half-way through the day and leave at any time. There are no prequisites and sketchers are at all levels of skill and experience. I always have a good time when I spend the day with them! Everyone is very nice and very encouraging.

I love the roller coaster page too. thanks for sharing all the pics. My dad is from Long Island and he has told me stories about Coney Island. I hope to visit someday but for now I’m very happy to see these pics. Thanks, Julie.

Thanks for the fun posts, pics and sketches. So much color and history, would like to go sometime.
Your drawing skills keep getting better and better…as practicing does make one more comfortable with the seeing, editing, shading etc.
You are proof of that. The other sketchers are good too.

Ahhh the bumper cars! When I was a kid we went to the Santa Cruz Boardwalk. Very similar to Coney Island in all aspects. I spend a lot of time riding bumper cars when I was a kid. I am NOT a roller coaster person either.
