Welcome to Stencil-a-Palooza! Several days a week for the next month or so I'll be featuring one of my eighteen stencil designs for The Crafter's Workshop! Each post comes with a giveaway. Leave a comment answering the question-of-the-day and you might be the winner of that day's featured stencil in both 6×6 and 12×12! Comments will remain open on this post for seventy-two hours. The winner will be announced after that. In the meantime, if you'd like to purchase any of the stencils there are many in-person and online shops to choose from. See a complete list here.
Today I've got an awesome stencil hop with three wonderfully talented paper artiste types:
- Amy Tan: Amy is a multi-talented artist. She teaches classes all over the country as well as online at Big Picture Classes. She has a successful t-shirt line and scrapbooking line, both sold under the name "Amy Tangerine."
- May Flaum: May has authored several books including Scrapbook Workshop: The Best Techniques from Your Favorite Scrapbook Bloggers. She is a frequent guest on Paperclipping Roundtable, a long time teacher at Big Picture Classes, and a Contributing Editor at Scrapbook Update.
- Karen Ellis: Karen is the owner of the Art House Studio in Canada and hosts tons of fantastic mixed media workshops and events! She is a product designer for The Crafter's Workshop and MyStamp Box (products launching at CHA Winter – Jan 2012) and a contributing writer for Canadian Scrapbooker Magazine.
These girls are working with the frame stencils today. Yesterday's Leaf Frame and/or today's featured stencil TCW225 Flower Frame:
Like I mentioned yesterday, I designed the two "frame" stencils so that the center area is 4×6 on the 12×12 version (perfect for a photo) and 2×3 on the 6×6 version (perfect for a wallet sized print).
Here's the 12×12 version on a layout:
I used the 6×6 version with molding paste and glitter (dimensional glitter – whoa!) on the cover of my art journal:
Here is a Christmas card that incorporates the Flower Frame:
And of course, you can just use part of the frame, as I did on this layout:
Or as a sparkly hat on this tag:
In today's video I show you how to do a Petroleum Jelly (or Vaseline) resist technique in just over 1 minute.
This is the tag from the video:
And here is the same technique used as the background of a slightly more embellished tag:
Do you see the two flower petals used as embellishments here? They almost become leaves for the tiny doily and flower on the tag, don't you think? Pretty cool!
To win both the 6×6 and 12×12 versions of the Flower Frame Stencil, answer the Question of the Day:
Which of the projects from the hop excited you?
Just a reminder: To be eligible to win, you must post your comment in the comment section of this blog post. You cannot post on Facebook or by replying to the e-mail (if you subscribe) in your inbox. The reason for this is that I pick a winner via "random number generator" so I need a single list of comments.
Thanks for stopping by! Now get hopping!

Good Morning Julie.
While I LOVE your journal, I want to take this opportunity to tell you about Karen Ellis. Her shop is wonderful with many amazing products. But ….more than that, is Karen herself. She is absolutely amazing. She willingly shares all her ideas with an enthusiasm and passion that is contagious. She is a kind, generous and delightful person who makes creating a true joy.

I {heart} Karen’s shrine. It’s something I’ve wanted to do but haven’t got that far yet, and hers is very inspiring!

Hey Julie…while I loved all the items submitted for various reasons the one that excited me the most was yours! I love the way you used the modeling paste/paint on your journal! Will wait to see if I win first then will hop over to your shop and purchase the flower frame stencil. Have a good one…and thank you for sharing the stencil and the techniques

Being a scrapbooker I enjoyed all the different pages but I would have to say the project that excited me the most was your journal cover. I am itching to try my stencils with molding/modeling paste. I’ve been busy using them with stains, inks and paints but still to try textures.

Hi Julie, I found your journal cover and 12X12 layout the most exciting of them all. And really, I’d like to see some type of tutorial for both of them. I love how you seamlessly transition all those colors with no mud. My inquiring mind wants to know “how to do that”!

They were all great projects. But the one that was the most exciting for me was the mixed media quilted shrine by Karen Ellis. Loved all the details about it. It’s a great family piece. Thanks for the chance,

My favorite was May Flaum’s page. I like the way she used 3 stencils to enhance one layout. I also liked it that she showed several different ways to use one stencil. I think her kids are cute! lol

Beautiful stencil! My favs are the ones where you, Amy and May singled out a flower on the stencil. Somehow, it just never occurred to me to use it that way! Thanks for the inspiration.

having challenge posting comments – but love the wedding layout best – cutaway center is a great idea for scrappers and card makers – nice colors, great flowers, love the lacy border at the bottom as well.

Julie I love all of the projects but I think my 2 favorites are your journal cover and the framed picture that Karen made for her daughter. That framed picture had me laughing as I could just picture my daughters face if she opened that Christmas morning. Thank you for the chance to win the stencils

Absolutely loved all the projects! Your journal cover is fantastic and will definately need to give it a try, as well as the vaseline resist. I’ve had a little jar of that stuff sitting in my medicine cabinet for about 3 years and now I can finally use it :p I also really loved Karen’s quilted shrine. What an absolutely beautiful and memorable gift that’s gonna make. Love the story and meaning behind it. Thanks for another inspiring hop!

I really like using the stencil & molding paste for a journal cover. I have 3 completed journals and none of them have decorated covers because I’m at a loss of what to do… SO, I would love to win the stencil & finally decorate at least one of my completed journals!!! 🙂

Love all of your inspiration, Julie!
I save a lot of your blog posts for eye-candy and inspiration starters, but it often seems like something more than I can do. Amy Tan’s work does look do-able to me. Love the stencils and would never think to purchase them without all of this inspiration…thanks!

I love your technique using petroleum jelly and will use it for sure but I fell in love with Karen’s idea for using stencils with shrink plastic. Why didn’t I think of this? It opens a whole new door for using the stencils I have and will buy next. Thanks so much for your hop and inspiration!

Ohh Julie I love this stencil! And now I hope I didn’t win yesterdays. Yes that is bad! I know! Once I saw the journal cover picture, I stopped dead in my tracks. I loved it and thought of all the things I could do with this one. Thanks for putting creativity back in my very busy mind during this holiday time.

I liked Karen Ellis’ shrine. Loved seeing how she used the stencils on different fabrics and even shrink plastic in her second piece. Thanks for the chance to win!

I can see I’m not alone in singling out Karen Ellis; her shrine really moved me. As a fellow Canuck I feel honoured and privileged to know Karen and her fabulous shop – and one of these days I’ll alight long enough in her town to actually take a class with her.
Julie, your leaf stencil continues to be my favourite – and that’s saying something as I love many of them. Thanks again for some wonderful inspiration!

I was blown away by Karen Ellis’ Leaf & Flower Frames! I had to look HARD to see your stencils. Wish I could do cool art like that!
Amy Tan’s scrap lay-outs were closer to the way I work.

I love, love, love the molding paste on the journal cover. I’ve been more excited about creating the pages inside my journal than decorating the outside of it but this inspired me and I decorated two of my journals using your stencils and molding past. Just found you on YouTube and saw the vaseline resist technique there. I’ll be getting some vaseline of my next trip to the dollar store. Thanks for all the great inspiration!

I loved Amy Tan’s Tropical paradise layout with the use of the flower frame. I also loved your modeling paste and glitter use of the flower frame on your art journal book! I have the same book and would love to personalize it for myself. Thanks for the idea and for the chance to win these stencils.

Julie, I LOVE the idea of using modeling paste with a stencil for a book cover! I’m going to try this very soon, as I’m almost ready to bind two new books. I’ve been doing something like this this in reverse–cutting multiple stencils from 140# cardstock and glueing them (PVA) on top of each other to make a plied, heavy cardboard, then glueing them (PVA) to the canvas I’ll use as a book cover, to make a bas-relief cover. Never thought of using the stencils as, um, stencils, and doing this the right-way-round with modeling paste!
Also, I wanted to tell you how very much I enjoy your website! I love the crisp, clean layout. Very easy to read, plenty of information, but not too much competing with the pics and text you want to showcase, and just an all-round good design. I come here everyday to look, because I know I can get in and get out quickly with all the information I need, and without having to sort through too much fluff and too many extraneous pics, badges, and banners, etc. that take time away from why I’m here in the first place. Probably should have put that in a personal message, but I just wanted you to know that I LOVE how easy and pleasing it is to find the great content on your site! I look forward to each visit, and your updates are usually the first emails I choose to open each morning (or afternoon…whenever I finally get around to email…) XOXO

Thanks for the great video! I’m excited to try that.
I was most excited by Amy’s layouts. I especially like how she got that semi-opaque look using the mist over the dark background with the flower stencil. Really pretty and striking!

julie I liked them all as well. Thank-you for letting us all see and learn how to use your products. So many different ideas. Your’s I must say is still my favorite. I am doing the art Journaling class with you online, and tomorrow is the last day. I will need therapy from my withdrawl symptoms!! The design on the cover of the journal is just what I need. i also spilt of splatters paint on mine and it is begging for something to take the eye away and make it pretty. Love seeing your work. My family calls me a Julie stalker, oh, well that is who I am 🙂 Jackie

The design on the cover of the journal is just what I need. i also spilt of splatters paint on mine and it is begging for something to take the eye away and make it pretty. Love seeing your work. My family calls me a Julie stalker, oh, well that is who I am 🙂 Jackie
Impossible to choose one when I have been overly stimulated and inspire. May’s scrapbook page showed so much depth, Karen’s shrine was beautiful, and your journal cover and the vaseline resist. All of these and more have my head spinning. How cute to use a flower for a hat. Julie, thank you for sharing.

I am a tag freak, and so all of the tags caught my attention. I am going to do a 52 tag book this year, 1 a week. Each tag will be something about me (favorite books, music, plays, etc.) so that I can leave it to my daughter to share with her children.

There are some cool things that are done. My fav though is the use of the dimensional paste with glitter you did on this journal. Must get me some of that!

I am torn between Karens Art Quilt and your Journal cover – I want to try both. Obviously I am being drawn to the fabric possibilities. I am also wondering if you have tried your stencils with Jacquard paint and made an art quilt yourself yet. Would it run? Hmmmm.

I love the cover of your art journal, but Karen’s photo of herself in the ‘fancy’ frame for her daughter.

My Mama use to use vasoline for everything…dry skin, rough heels, chapped lips, and red sore noses from blowing your nose too much…she would be totally shocked to see a tag made with vasoline and a stencil. I love this technique!!!!!

I liked all the projects, but I think the shrine excited me most – largely because I haven’t pulled out my sewing machine for a while and this might just be the push I need. I’m also really excited about the Vaseline resist.

Karen’s projects touched me deeply because she used objects that belonged to the people she loved and incorporated other elements to make it a fab project. Thanks for the chance to win – I’m loving all the stencils!

I absolutely loved the vaseline resist technique. It is so cool. Will definitely be giving it a try. Have really enjoyed all the stencil hops. So many ideas I would never have thought to try. I am learning to think outside the box. Love the flower frame stencil. Thanks, Julie.

I use Jacquard paints all the time. Just remember to use very little paint and they dont run under the stencil at all.

What excited me the most was the Vaseline resist, great on the tags and easily translatable to handmade greeting cards. The batik look appeals to me and can be so easily adapted to various seasons, occasions. I love the versatility among the designers, particularly making the petal or leaf elements of shrink plastic. Another post full of exciting possibilities.

While I am primarily a scrapbooker and loved the different techniques you showed, I was blown away with Karen’s cloth shrine. What a wonderful way to incorporate all the treasures I save but never look at, such as my grandmother’s hankies. I love the different ways she used the leaf stencil, especially making the little leaves under the nest. I may have to give it a go after the holidays. 🙂
