I found a little pocket of time for myself this week and worked on painting two canvases. This is the one I'm happier with at the moment. The other needs some more marination time.
When I started the canvas it was with the purpose of making the background as important as the face. I recently took a class where the teacher pointed out that I tend to let backgrounds just "be" rather than use them as an integral part of the composition.
I'm also continuing to push myself away from "pretty" into interesting. For instance, I know her two eyes are uneven. I thought about going in to fix it, but I like the effect, so I left it. It definitely adds to the creepy rather than pretty factor.
I also challenged myself to try some new techniques and even some new paint! I played around with Golden High Flow Acrylics and really enjoyed myself. They're super thin — almost ink like. Made for easy drips and layers of thin color!
Finally, I played around with having a strong story in my mind when I created this piece and tried using some symbolism. However, I'm not sure it comes across. So, help me out. What's the story you see in this painting?
Thanks for stopping by!
Do you think these High Flow acrylic paints are more forgiving for beginners? I want to get some Golden paints, not sure which to get to be more forgiving & versatile. Thanks!
Love these.

I see that it is a jungle out there and that the jungle has its own beauty. It can be savage and tropical or warm and lush (possibly Hawaiian?)the figure is caught up in the ever changing atmosphere of it all. Now, that probably wasn’t even remotely where you were when you created this canvas but that is what is so much fun about viewing someone else’s work…we all see what we ourselves bring to the canvas alongside what the artist has spread before us.

Happy, but sad. There is joy and beauty, but hidden away, camouflaged really, is a bit of sadness. My two cents.

Makes me think of a funeral where you can smile over the memories of your loved one and cry for their loss. Her eyes looks so sad. The flowers being so prominent also make me think of a wake/funeral.

A Woman, maybe a witch, looks out to looks out into the tropical rain, allowing the rain an outlet from her eyes.

When it rains, it pours. A woman is feeling boxed in, pulled in all directions – some of her stressors make her sad, some make her angry, and then there are some small bright moments. She’s in a brighter moment; thus, the small smile on her light face.

Quite beautiful but someone is surrounded by it all. Are those tears ? Maybe the beauty is not only surrounding but holding up at the same time. You never know what’s going to truly come out when you put pen or brush to hand.

Julie, it seems as though she feels “boxed in,” which explains why she is smiling yet crying. Really beautiful and meaningful.

Symbols of falling tears, but surrounded by the beauty of nature. There are times (spaces) without tears. Like life. And the tears fall the. Fall away. She seems a little like she’s partly smiling. Like the hurt is there in the moment, but she knows it will pass and she will be happy soon. Maybe like you have to get through this time (transition maybe) to move through to something better.

I see a very young lady, emerging from the flora, and those languished eyes are a natural beauty on her face. She knows she is pretty and her smile tells. At that moment is hidden waiting for her lover!…

P.S.I think you do better work when you follow your inner self. I like your own style better than this — regardless of what a teacher told you.

It reminds me of the quote “Into each life some rain must fall, but an optimist always expects a rainbow”. There is rain, and there are tears, but she has a smile on her face, and she is surrounded by colour and beauty.

First off I like the phrase “marination time”; I often let things sit and while I am working and even thinking about something else, what I need to do with the piece suddenly becomes obvious to me.
The piece is moving. The girl is mostly happy but slightly melancholy. There is some tears and some rain or troubles in her life and past, but she is a survivor and an overcomer, she is not defeated, but proudly and bravely is facing her new world which is mostly happy and exciting as the flowers and such show, but she is more of a realist now and definately not waiting for Prince Charming, but is out being her own fierce Princess and making her own way in life and while the journey is a little scary she is loving it.
That’s what I see.
